Adams man killed by neighbor with crossbow trying to halt pit bull attack identified as Joshua Jadusingh

Updated 5:05 PM; Today 4:41 PM

By Jeanette DeForge | jdeforge@repub.com

ADAMS – The Berkshire District Attorney has identified the victim accidentally killed by a neighbor who was trying to stop a pair of attacking pit bulls with a crossbow, as a 27-year-old town resident.

Joshua Jadusingh was killed during a dog attack that occurred shortly after noon, Wednesday in an apartment on 19 Bellevue Ave.

Initially, police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a dog attack at the apartment building. When the two officers and a K9 unit responded they found two mature male pit bulls fighting, said Andrew McKeever, spokesman for Berkshire District Attorney Andrea Harrington.

The dogs turned to attack responding officers and police shot and killed the animals with their service weapons, he said.

Police then found Jadusingh had been hit and killed by a crossbow arrow - known as a bolt - in the apartment. A child, whose age has not been released, was found unharmed in a nearby room, McKeever said.

“Investigators currently believe a neighbor heard the commotion, called police and then made entry into the apartment,” he said. “The neighbor got a crossbow and shot at the dogs.”

The arrow hit one of the dogs in the neck, penetrated a door and hit Jadusingh as he was trying to barricade himself from the animals, Harrington said.

The death has been determined to be accidental, Harrington said.

One of the dogs belonged to Jadusingh and the second was owned by another adult. They were known to be aggressive and one had attacked someone in 2018, Harrington said.

The Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office, with its Crime Scene Service Section, Crime Lab and Firearm Identification Section are all investigating the death. The Adams Animal Control, Adams Police, The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office also responded to the scene are involved with the investigation, he said.

Sad to hear about the loss of life.

However, I'm very interested in the physics of the bolt hitting one of the dogs in the neck, penetratinga door, and killing the victim. Too bad there wasn't a diagram in the article as I'm left wondering if it was a deflection, bad shot angle, or both?

agreed

i could see a scenario where the shooter is standing lower - like in the yard - aiming 'up' toward the victims raised front porch area where the dogs are attacking the victim at his doorstep. he fires and the bolt passes through the dog and door...

100% speculation on my part though.

gives me enhanced respect for the power of a crossbow. never owned one.

Read AGINCOURT by Bernard Cornwell (2008). Excellent historical fiction about one of the most famous battles ever fought. Live St Crispin's Day in 1415. I enjoyed the audio book narrated by Charles Keating, and later read the novel. Gives you a real sense of what wood, sinew, feathers, glue, and years of practice can achieve (the English yew bow). The French were more into the crossbows, a wickedly deadly weapon.

Modern crossbows are no joke. Even with a modern compound bow, I could easily imagine an arrow zipping straight through the dog and a hollow core door and into the person on the other side. Bad way to die. Be sure of your target, and what's beyond it.

I'd love a copy of AGINCOURT. Big Grin
Let's just say it's been of interest to me lately. Wink

Crossbow bolts really penetrate. Where an arrow released by a compound bow is stopped by a bale of hay, that same bale will allow a crossbow bolt to pass right through.

Didn't one the Popes try to forbid crossbows because of the power?

Cross bows were used in medieval times to specifically penetrate the plate armor worn by knights. I've seen some reports where it was effective up to 150 yds or so. Thus it's not surprising it would go through a dog, a door and keep on going. Unfortunate accident that's for sure.

Yes, the Church banned it supposedly because too many nobles (knights) were being targeted and killed. Google says "In 1139, a Church council declared crossbows unfit for Christian use -- except against Infidels." Later on the ban was repealed.

When living in ct, i was hunting in a ground blind. I was about 10 yards from two deer standing side ways to me. About 5 ft appart from each other. I had a ten point crossbow. Using 100grn thunder heads. The bolt went through both lungs on both deer, skipped off the ground and penetrated a metal gascan (empty) 20yds away. The very tip of the bolt touched the back of the gas can.

I owned a crossbow with a 150lb draw weight. I made the mistake of firing a bolt into a stump; I had to drill it out. It penetrated at least 6-8 inches into solid wood.

Yes, I could see how this could have happened. The guy should have followed the rules and known his target and what was behind it. My dad owns a crossbow for hunting in Pennsylvania that has almost rifle-like power, it even has a scope on it and he’s actually shot through deer with it.

The newest crossbows have insane power. I have a buddy that has one that shoots over 400grain bolts at over 300ft per second. In this case I doubt it was a $1200 dollar crossbow but the fact that even an average crossbow with field tips will have an over penetration problem which can cause a problem like this.

The shooter could have been standing right next to the dog and in the excitement didn’t look past the target. He could have then put the crossbow right next to the dogs neck and pulled the trigger. The field tip then immediately went through the dogs neck then ricocheted off the concrete and went through the door killing the kid. Very sad result and the guy trying to do the right thing will have to think about that for the rest of his life, unfortunately.

I guess field tip because most broad heads will expand on impact and would probably have not made it through the door in that condition. The dog probably wouldn’t have been still alive to run at the police officers either.

Two deer one-shot, yeah, I was happy. They went 10 feet. The first continued to eat till he dropped. the second jumped about 10 feet ran 20 feet and collapsed.

I am shooting 400 grain bolts, 180 lb crossbow. Pushing at about 260fps IIRC. I have not done a radar testing to back that up. The lightweight carbon bolts go considerably faster. I have much better accuracy with the aluminum bolts.

Sounds like karma to me. Guy kept an aggressive dog which had previously attacked someone. Dog fights another dog and instead of taking responsibility for his aggressive dog, he hides inside?

Smudge piped up on the very next post. But it is a free downloadable audiobook via Libby, the library loan application tied to many library collections (I use Libby and somehow managed to get access to three library collections). "Overdrive" may be another library audiobook application.
