I actually snatched a plug out by the cord this past week for the first time in my adult life. I have no idea why I did it but I swear I felt my dad reach down from heaven and slap me in the back of the head.
I have both received and given counseling on the proper way to unplug.

I am not an animal, so I pull it out from the plug, not the cord.

I like to crack that cord like a whip and jerk it out of the plug at the speed of sound.

I generally grasp the plug to remove it from the outlet. In a few instances I am not able to reach it to do that and I will gently, slowly pull the cord to unplug the device.

Generally buy the plug, if by the cord I try to do it gently and straight out.

Eventually the outlets can loosen up and you can get some arcing in there when something is plugged in.

If you want to cause premature cord failures and possibly equipment failures, keep pulling on the cord.

Otherwise, pull the plug.

Nope. I always pull the plug itself. It's the way I was told to do it as a child and it's something that's always stayed with me.

I always pull the plug itself...except the vaccume cleaner...which usually unplugs it's own damn self when I'm using it (when I stretchhhhhh that last few inches to suck up that escaped popcorn hull/dead stinkbug/piece of mulch/etc.) offen the floor...I just jerk it by the cord (you can't destroy it!)

I'm in the camp of try to always pull by the plug, but if I can't reach it, I'll carefully pull by the cord.

Always pull by the plug. Always. Apple cords are the perfect example of why this is prudent. I tell my kids all the time to do it the right way, but watch them yank by the wire when they’re in a hurry... I’ve had the same cord in my cruiser for going on 3 years. Other than being a little dirty, it looks new. Pull from the damn plug.

I will use the plug method as much as possible. As far as these newer molded cord/plug combos I really don't trust or like them. They just seem flimsy to me. As far as my pistols go I do not slam the slide closed on an empty chamber on any of them nor do I dry fire them.

I’ve been popping plugs out by the cord for two or three years now, and have yet to see any damage. I do pop ‘em out straight. Smile

If it is something expensive or something that I want to take care of, I pull by the plug. 3 prong anything always by the plug. Those cheapy two prong 6-9' extensions, if it is a straight pull out of the socket, I have yanked a few.

If I am within arm's reach of the plug I'll grab the plug. Otherwise the cord gets a pull. Been doing it this way for over 50 years and have yet to ruin an outlet, cord, plug, or appliance. YMMV.

I grasp the plug by the plug body and remove it that way, as Taught By Dad. Besides: Being an electrical/electronics guy, myself, I know how all that stuff's put together and I know yanking cords out by the cord is Not Good.

That being said: I do occasionally get lazy and do it the wrong way.
