The correct answer is “Because you said so.”

That, however, is a perfect example of why you said so.

So glad you are able to weed these people out.

It’s a lot of work you shouldn’t have to do but is very much appreciated.

It goes beyond an arbitrary decision that created the rules.

It's a privilege given to participating members. Participating members is defined as people who participate in the back and forth and exchange of ideas on the pages of this forum.

It cost money to run forums like this, not to mention the time and energy to manage it administratively plus wading in among the weeds to pluck the weeds outs of discussion threads. But no one has been paid to be able to participate in this forum unlike most forums who use member subscriptions or even third party ads.

The Classifieds section is obviously not the primary purpose as to why this forum exists. It's provided as an ancillary benefit. It's like you're invited to a party to mingle and chit chat and engage in discussions. Hors d'oeuvres are provided by the host to make the experience even more pleasant. It's bad form to just sit in a corner not talking to anyone and just scarfing up the snacks.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

Because that's how "benefits" work.

The Classifieds are not an entitlement.

And again. Thank you for your commitment in a world of non-committal culture.

As much fraud that has cropped up over the past 5-10 years I think it would be crazy to just buy from “anybody” on any forum.

I think membership and even minimum post rules are a good thing, and I’ve even run up against them selling in the past on another forum (like I said no harm no foul I agree with them.)

I’ve been here almost seventeen years and only made two purchases in the classifieds but have never worried about the sale going off because of the rules you set. I tried one on a major marketplace a few months ago after two purchases from others but backed away from a potential deal because of the non-responsiveness of the seller and the resulting bad vibe. Lesson learned there and appreciate the good experience with para-trusted sellers here.

Common decency should be the only reason needed.

Staying on the classifieds tit the whole time while not contributing SHOULD make anyone feel a bit like a POS.

It's not my intention to crush this guy, since he's gone (again) and should now know to not come back, not even after a decade, but there is a point I wish to make here which goes beyond the specifics of his behavior here.

First off, notice how he said he thought his posting rights were revoked because he posted infrequently, but when I pointed out that the cause was his behavior when asked about a sale he made, oh, well, out came specifics.

Dishonesty, right there.

His claim, as you can see in the thread I linked to, was the following:
quote:
we can revisit that sale i didn’t fulfill which was the 45-70 marlin that was shipped out west. ups
absolutely destroyed it breaking the sights and stock. i jumped thru hoops and had it resolved with ups within 24 hours and the gentleman had a check for new sights, stock
and cost for the gunsmith. the buyer then after the agreed upon sale came at me and wanted another $250 dollars due to a tax imposed by his state to transfer it in. that was not agreed upon pre sale and i obviously said no. i also offered to take it back as long as he paid the shipping back and sent me the money ups provided to repair it. at that point he would of been out the $250 tax and the shipping so he balked and somehow reported to the admin that i didn’t fulfill my end which was not truthful.
I searched through old emails and found the complaint from the buyer:

"I hate to even write this email but ... let's see what you think.

Had a bad deal with a forum member who shipped a rifle (45-70 Marlin Guide Gun) to me improperly packed, did not include a copy of a DL for the FFL, and the rifle had its' rear sight broken during shipment.

I figured $79.00 to fix the sight, no big deal.

The member has dragged me through the claim process with UPS saying I needed to provide a quote (I had provided pictures and had the FFL document the issues on intake). I probably have over seven to ten hours in this transaction now. After weeks of messing with him over this deal I offered just to send me $100.00 and we would call it square. He bulked. The claim was approved by USPS and now he only wants to pay $48.00 for the damage saying: "You can fix it yourself"

I have supporting emails and pictures of all of this.

Direction?

Thanks in advance and I hate to bother you with this."

The buyer offers to provide me with supporting evidence and makes no mention of demanding 250.00 from the seller. How might this work out for the buyer if I asked him for the evidence he offered and there was in that evidence a demand from him for 250.00 that he failed to mention in his complaint to me? Sounds unlikely, doesn't it? And the seller saying "You can fix it yourself" rings true to me, based upon the fact that his behavior was poor enough in 2016 that I booted him and notated his account. It fits nicely with his comment to me that "unlike you this site is insignificant in my day to day."

I must have confronted him back then in the ad in question, because I find no evidence of an email exchange with the guy, but I have arbitrated more Classifieds disputes than I could count, and I've gotten a good sense of a person's character, based upon how they behave when it comes to matters of money and property. I am strongly inclined to believe the person who I have no evidence lied to me in this matter, over the one who lied to me today.

What do you make of my request of this guy today?
quote:
Given all of this, tell me why I should allow you to sell your pistol here.
If I had made up my mind to boot him, what would be the point of that? If you say "just to screw with him" you would be wrong.

Here's my point- and every active member of this forum needs to keep this in mind when things turn sour for them here: Just be honest with me.

That's all

Just be honest with me.

The dispute in question was nine years ago. People make mistakes, and people can change over time- become wiser, become calmer.

If this ex-member had been honest with me: "Yeah, there was a problem years ago and I gave you static. If it happened today, I would behave differently. I regret how it played out."

All the difference in the world, gents.

Don't lie to me, don't conveniently "forget" details, don't misrepresent events. Everybody screws up, and I am a more forgiving man than the reputation I have purposefully cultivated for myself.

Honesty and candor- I recognize it and I give much credit for it.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.
