Why don’t you fix your little problem and light this candle

Ok, It is for a wedding, and I cannot get out of it. We are driving.
The way I understand it, I can take a handgun with me if I follow these rules:
It is unloaded
It is in a locked container
A loaded magazine can be in the same locked container but not inserted in the magwell.
If the above is acceptable, Will my Sig 229 DAK with three 12 round mags be OK?

Don't think the 12rd mags are legal to import (bring into the state) at all. Better find some 10 round mags or bring a different gun. Yes, it's stupid. Yes it sucks. Yes I am moving. OZ
I just did this except we flew there. The California attorney general's site says you can take any handgun in a locked hard case no rounds chambered. No mag inserted. The glove box doesn't count as a locked container. I took a handgun that is on the approved list with 10 round mags even though the language stated "any handgun" and nothing about mag round count, just to be well within the standard. while we traveled, the gun was locked in the case. while we slept, it was where I like to keep it. Flying with it was seamless except for the TSA agent in SLC asked me a couple of stupid and pointless questions about whether I had a TSA approved lock. For the record, the lock does not have to be TSA approved.

Ok, I can see the 10 round mag limitation. but none of my glocks or sigs are on the "approved" list. Now I know that is for import, sale, manufacture" but can I be lit up for it not being on 'the list'

I may wind up doing that. I find this whole process irritating.

We have friends in Nor Cal and drive down to see them at least once a year. I have a lockable metal case with a steel cable that I wrap around the rear seat frame. I always bring a 1911 with 2 mags so the mag restriction isn't an issue. CA. has the castle doctrine so you can load up in your hotel/motel room.

True, but it goes a little further than that. Couple years ago, when I took the FAA exam for Airline Transport Pilot, there were questions on the test about this. Correct answer: the lock MUST NOT be TSA approved, and the passenger MAY NOT surrender the key (or combination) to TSA agents. If TSA wants to inspect, examine, the passenger must open the lock, but must retain possession of the key (or combination).

It is split across multiple posts, but you have the answers: a) No mags over ten rounds. b) The CA Roster (the list) is irrelevant to your purposes. c) Locked case with pistol and loaded mags is okay as long as none are in the gun. d) Loaded gun is okay in your “castle”. Most likely be okay at a campsite in your parked camper, though not driving in it. If you’re visiting friends and on their private property your okay. Just don’t be in public with a loaded gun.
Have a good trip.

If you are passing through Northern California, and would like to borrow a pistol for the duration of your stay...... I might know a guy who could loan you one.
CA has also passed some stupid ammunition laws. Folks from out of state can bring it with them, but can't buy it here.

The rules regarding loaning firearms has changed recently I believe. I don't know enough about them to comment specifically, but care should be taken.

How is bringing anything with you on a temporary visit with firm plans to leave by a date certain considered "importation?" When I go through customs in other countries, I don't declare my personally owned items like a watch, that I plan to bring back with me when I leave. For the purposes of crossing int'l. borders, importation means things you bring in and don't take back home with you.
