As a landlubber I’ve never known or had use for nautical miles. I knew difference between say knots and miles per hour and what starboard and port meant but that’s about the sum of my nautical knowledge. Hellfire, I didn’t even know about nautical miles but here’s what they are: “ A nautical mile is based on the circumference of the earth, and is equal to one minute of latitude. It is slightly more than a statute (land measured) mile (1 nautical mile = 1.1508 statute miles ). Nautical miles are used for charting and navigating.” So there, if you didn’t know, now you know. You’re welcome! ----------------------------------------------- What's the sense in working hard if you never get to play?

5,280 feet vs 6076 feet. "The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people." "Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy." "I did," said Ford, "it is." "So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?" "It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want." "You mean they actually vote for the lizards." "Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course." "But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?" "Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Yeah, and we've got a secret hand shake too. Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. Their children, brought up easy, let it slip away again, poor fools. And their grandchildren are once more slaves. -D.H. Lawrence

It would be easier if we came up with new names for new concepts, rather than using old names and creating chaos. Nautical vs Statue Miles, Force vs Mass Pounds, Time vs Angular Minutes, Bee vs Ear Wax... Some of them can leave a bad taste in your mouth if you use them wrong. === I would like to apologize to anyone I have *not* offended. Please be patient. I will get to you shortly.

The Unmanned Writer |
Yes there is. I'm retired Navy and was part of an interviewing team (all of the team was prior military). Guy sitting next to was a retired ring knocker. Candidate comes in, sat down, and knocked his ring on conference table. I barely noticed until the gent next to me did the same followed by two or three additional times during the interview. The candidate didn't get the position, he was hired for a higher level position. In that case, the candidate was clearly over qualified for the position (think retired Captain with a master's in English interviewing for a tech writer position) he interviewed for and I suspect the gent next to me referred the candidate to the higher position. Never did conform it though. Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
