Okay, you're the backup winner.

Thank you. And as a plus, the RCA logo is the same era as my Hi-Fi

Since you have winners, can I know what it is? At first, I thought it was to hold pins in place to solder but since vacuum tubes came up, is it simply to straighten out bent pins?

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

My guy hasn't yet responded, so why don't you go ahead and give it to a SFite with an interest in the hobby?

ensigmatic,

No, your friend is first. I'm in no rush. Give it time.

Yup, pin straightener. Handy on tubes in general altho you had to be somewhat hamfisted to bend a pin on the bigger tubes. Where it really came in handy was on the Nuvistors (upper righthand corner).

They were tiny little tin cans, about 3/8ths of an inch (maybe a bit less) in diameter, about a half-inch high and tiny, delicate little pins on them. They were inevitably wedged into a corner between MUCH larger (and usually hot...) components and a beeyotch to get seated.

When I was a bench tech in the Navy, I worked on R-1125 and R-1250 wideband receivers and they had a half dozen of the little bastiges in them.

EDIT...I mis-remembered the nomenclature on that receiver, it was an R-1230:

Nuvistors were in the very back right corner and on the left between the air-dielectric tuning capacitors.

Not that anybody cares, but I went on a short nostalgia trip and found a picture. I probably still have scar tissue on my finger tips from pulling and reseating those little fuckers. They got HOT and they didn't make (at least we didn't have) a tube puller small enough to grab them and if you tried to use needle-nose pliers you'd usually crush the can.

Very well. He still hasn't replied, so I'm asking his brother to ping him.

Well, my friend declined the offer, PHPaul. Thanks for holding it for me, though.

And thanks for the old hardware pics. Never worked with that particular gear, but I worked with gear of a similar vintage.

Okay, thanks for getting back to me on that. I'll get in touch with Shovelhead.

I remember fondly the Delco tube radio I had in my 1952 Buick Special, took up the whole center section of the dash (it was a huge dash). Sound wasn't great, but it sure could pull in those Mexican rock stations in the middle of the night, all the way to the mid-Atlantic beaches! Those were the days.
