Oh yes, yes they can and quite well.


The Barge Canal near the mouth of Crystal River in Florida extends out into the Gulf of Mexico. The dirt dredged up from the formation of the canal was built into what we local call the "Spoils Banks". The Banks were built up with various cuts in them to allow for the movement of water. During tide changes the current can really rip through those cuts.

I recall seeing a rattlesnake navigating the a cut between spoil banks more than a mile offshore.

We have them around us but I've only seen or been buzzed at a few times. A few weeks ago my dog was acting up on our patio, I went to look and she was examining a small Great Basin Rattlesnake. She was putting her nose within 6-12 inches! I got her away, got a pair of kitchen tongs and moved it to the scrub below our yard. The dog has the vaccination and will be getting avoidance training in October.
