My God, they're actually finally going ahead with this stupidity.

quote:

Britain’s Poundland discount chain has announced it will stop selling kitchen knives in all of its stores to help tackle soaring youth violence.
The company, whose stores have been a major fixture on UK high streets since 1990, is the first major retailer to go ahead with the anti-knife measure recently recommended by a judge, and other brands are expected to follow suit, according to the Birmingham Mail.

As of Friday, kitchen knives are no longer available at any of its 59 West Midlands branches, Poundland said, noting that the ban will be extended to all 850 UK stores by the end of the year.

Reportedly suffering “epidemic” levels of violence, the West Midlands has the fastest growing rate of knife crime outside London, where the company banned blade sales in April after the capital saw 35 deadly stabbings in the just first few months of 2018.

Poundland retail director, Austin Cooke, said: “The decision to stop selling kitchen knives not only in the West Midlands, but nationwide, is a commitment that we know means a lot to both our colleagues and our customers.

“For a long time they’ve expressed their concern around the associated risk of having knives available and the unfortunate truth is that in the wrong hands, knives can be used for the wrong purpose.

[Ed. note: So can any number of tools.]

“The safety of our colleagues and customers is crucial and we hope our fellow retailers will follow our lead,” he added.

[Ed. note: Like lemmings off a cliff.]

Crime researcher Emilia Gill, from the anti-youth violence campaign JAGS Foundation, said Poundland’s decision to pull knives off the shelf was “a good start”, but argued that many lives could have been saved had companies taken action sooner.

The problem with knives is that you can always find somewhere to access them,” she told The Sun. “So even though Poundland has decided to do this, and it’s a brilliant start, you can just walk down the street to another shop and buy a knife that is virtually the same.

[Ed. note: No? Really? Somebody educate this ditz on the concept of a "shiv." What next: Bench grinders?]

Earlier this year Judge Nic Madge called for police to organise a national programme to blunt the points of the public’s kitchen knives.

Alleging long, sharp blades are unnecessary for ordinary domestic food preparation, the judge said a ban on chefs’ knives would be life-saving in Britain.

[Ed. note: Yeah, cutlery makers have only been making 'em that way for centuries "just because." (And I doubt it's actually chef's knives the miscreants are using. This is what happens when the clueless use terms they don't really understand.)]

This is an example of why many of us are dead set against even the slightest new restrictions on firearms. This is where such thinking eventually leads.

C'mon, give them a break. You don't think this action will reduce their violence problem??

This won't make one single bit of difference, not one solitary speck. Ban whatever you want. Unless you intend to ban the human race, this stuff will continue unabated.

Perhaps, but their head is up their ass.

The pattern seems clear. Eliminate guns, they use knives. Eliminate knives, they will use bats, rocks, hammers, tire irons, etc.

Yes, you would end up having to ban the human race.

Foolishness. Idiocy. An utter waste of time.

And that's where it stops, because "knives" suitable for simple aggression against the unarmed are trivially easy to fabricate. Some rebar, a hacksaw, bench grinder and file, and some electrical tape (leather boot lace or paracord if you want to get fancy): Violà: "Knife". (Well, fancy shiv, but it serves the same purpose.)

Idiots

Hmm I see the Socs and Greasers are rumbling in other countries now....Oklahoma must have gotten boring.

Why dosen't the government just outlaw violence? Much easier than outlawing particular tools...

Yep, just like guns, white vans, rocks, hands and even pillows can be used to smother one to death. The unfortunate truth is how stupid some people can be. I really wonder if some of these idiots have any limits to their delusional thinking.

We must be sharing a mind this morning as I thought the exact same thing as I was reading the post.

The inanimate object is not the problem, the problem is the behavior. You can’t “fix” the problem by diddling with the object, take one away and another replaces it and the merry go round just keeps spinning. Until the behavior is addressed and sufficiently sure and severe consequences are in place, the crime continues.

Just more emotionally driven “do something” response devoid of logic or reason. I seem to recall hearing England having a pretty extensive CCTV system to “monitor” the subjects not sure if that is just London or in other urban areas as well. Doesn’t seem to make a lick of difference though.

I’m curious if the constabulary spend as much time/effort on the hooligans committing the crimes as they seem to spend on the poor sods who dare to “illegally” defend themselves from the attacks.

Man clocked by rock, has phone stolen

EDMONDS — A man had to get stitches after a stranger hit him in the head with a rock early Tuesday morning in Edmonds.

The Edmonds man, 42, was walking near a video game store on Highway 99 when another man, 35, stopped him to ask for money and cigarettes. The Edmonds man said he didn’t smoke, offered him $1 and kept going.

The stranger followed, according to court documents.

He asked for more money, and for the other man’s phone.

The Edmonds man eventually turned around to hand over another dollar. The suspect allegedly struck him in the head with a rock weighing at least five pounds.

The Edmonds man was disoriented. The suspect took the phone from his hand. The victim was able to put the suspect into a headlock from behind, and they both fell to the ground before the suspect got loose. He ran away and left behind his sweatshirt.

Police received a call about half an hour after midnight. They collected the bloody sweater as evidence.

They found the suspect about a block away, with blood and cuts on his right hand. He admitted to fighting someone. Officers found a bag outside the game store, and the man allegedly said it was his.

They asked him about the sweatshirt. He reportedly said it was his “blanket for now,” and the blood wasn’t his. He was arrested for investigation of first-degree robbery with a deadly weapon.

The Edmonds man needed about five stitches above his left eye, court papers show. An officer went back to the scene to collect the rock as evidence.

I wonder when the ban on sharpened sticks will follow? Or perhaps balled up fists?

Will the newest way to determine who goes first in any kind of game be called “paper-paper-paper”? Imitating rocks and scissors will soon be banned at this rate...

Well they could ban all metal.
