We have a fiberglass one piece tub shower combo. It is roughly 30" deep and 60 wide. Valve and shower head are on the left. The tub has a serious crack in it. It was there from the get go. Was repaired but never fixed right. So it is coming out and I need a replacement. Do not need the tub but would like a step in unit maybe with frosted glass or plastic doors. Same dimension. I was told I would need a multi piece unit. a pan three panels. Can you guys provide some clarity on what I want. Maybe unit suggestions. Good quality please. Thank you. Yes getting a three piece plus pan into existing home is easier than one piece. You are one the right track. If you DIY the demo, you can save significant money. But I’d recommend wearing coveralls and good mask when sawzalling the old tub. Fiberglass on you sucks. Wait, what? |
^^^^ Full head to toe tyvek, and a full face respirator with the door closed and taped. Plastic sheet taped over everything you can feasibly cover. Plan on stuffing it and the tyvek into a garbage bag after shop-vac’ing every inch you can. I can instant karma you a suit if you need one in L or XL. If you're not dead-set on fiberglass, check with a local tile supply store to price out a shower remodel with tile. You might be surprised to find that, for not that much more than the cost of having a fiberglass insert installed, you may be able to have a tile shower instead. A quick Google shows that a multi-piece fiberglass shower stall from a big box store is going to run you $1500-$2500ish plus install cost (unless you plan to do it yourself). That'd be something approaching $2000-$3000 total for supplies and labor, plus the cost of a door. I had a master shower remodeled in 2019 down to the studs for $3800 total in supplies and labor, plus the cost of a door. That involved removing the previous fiberglass shower insert and having a new Kerdi waterproofing system and tile walls/floor professionally installed. And that was with a very specific style of expensive embossed/debossed tile that the (ex)wife couldn't live without, and a special style of pebble floor that had to be redone during install. It could have been done for closer to $3000ish total, with some less expensive options, especially if you go with larger format tile that requires less time to install. (We had actually gotten one quote for $2900 initially, before deciding to go with a different style.) Granted, that was pre-COVID. And labor/supply costs vary from region to region. Still, it very well may be that if you have several hundred more dollars to spare for the project, you could have a nicer tile shower instead of cheaper fiberglass. Worth at least checking out, if that interests you.

We used this material called Onyx which are acrylic panels with color matching acrylic caulk. Easier to clean than tile and looks better than the sectional fiberglass pieces.

Interestingly, I had priced out an Onyx setup before going with tile for the abovementioned remodel, including having an Onyx rep come to the house for a quote. It was actually more expensive than tile, and I don't think it looks as nice (though it's an improvement over fiberglass).

I am hoping to buy this for $1200 give or take. I do not need something really expensive. Or should I say more expensive than my budget. Thanks. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

If going fiberglass, you can embed the floor pan in concrete/masonry ? mix to make it more sturdy. Cut fiberglass is very sharp

Wait, what? |
I think they make poly kits you can line the floor with- also takes some “flex” out to make it feel more sturdy. “Remember to get vaccinated or a vaccinated person might get sick from a virus they got vaccinated against because you’re not vaccinated.” - author unknown

I did our master bath around 7 or 8 years ago and replaced the original tub with a 30x30 step in shower. I used Sterling by Kohler and set it in a morter bed, it's as good today as it was the day I put it in. Four piece unit and the way it all interlocks, leaks would be all but impossible.

Same as above Sterling. Only thing is their packaging sucks. Had to get a new unit twice because when I opened the box things were broken from shipping/handling NRA Life member NRA Certified Instructor "Our duty is to serve the mission, and if we're not doing that, then we have no right to call what we do service" Marcus Luttrell
