RogueJSKAnyone here standardize on a handgun platform? a caliber?
For carry, yes. I use polymer-framed striker-fired 9mms for all my duty/off duty defensive needs.
However, I still own other handguns and other calibers.

It seems to me that some handguns are so different from others, that using both might be a deficit in the worst of moments. Believing that, I've generally tried to stay standardized in what I own and use. Those SF members who have been here a fair chunk of their life might recall I was 100% HK P7 for a good while. I adored the platform, but I ultimately decided that for my purposes, the lighter weight, lower cost, higher capacity and added tac rail made the Glock 19 a better platform for me. So, I've been 100% Glock for many years now.
That said, I've recently picked up an Ed Brown 1911A1. I've owned several in the past. I think we all would agree, if you are going to use a 1911 for defense, you'd best train a bit. But will training on that manual of arms cross me up...? Perhaps., but I dig the 1911A1 and appreciate the kinesthetics of working with it.
Then the though occurred to me. Well.. Why not standardize on the 1911A1? I mean,. why not,
other than it is heavier, more complex, more expensive, has no rail, and probably three other reasons that aren't apparent to me now.
But still, I'm tempted. Old habits die hard.
This re-entry into 100+ year old handgun designs made me think of this comic. Hope you get a chuckle.
cartoon stolen, btw,
and yes, I get it,
I still have 3 DUAL turntables,,, and a Zenith console,,,
as far as the handguns, yes and no,
for carry, no glocks, even tho I own 2,
basic carry rotation,
J frame Smith 40
Seecamp 32
SIG P220
SIG P6
Cold Commander
I have a P228 that I may add and remove the P6 from that list,
and am looking at an early P229 (friend is trying to talk me into it vs carrying the P228)
I don't feel comfortable (manual of arms, so to speak) carrying the Glocks (17 and a 30)
no issues with a 1911, I have been shooting those since he early 80's,
loves me some P series classic SIG,
the J Frame and Seecamp are both great shooters, I am comfortable and good with both, and are excellent for this time of year in the pocket
eta , as far as calibers I also have 22lr, 357 mag, and .38 Super's so the handgun ammo pile is varied

justsiginGlock and 9mm
No apologies.... It works for me

cslingerThe vast amount of my shooting and owning of firearms is recreational/hobbiest in nature. I even enjoy the cleaning.
That said for me and my defensive purposes I moved back to DA/SA and settled on the HK P2000. It gives me a hammer fired Glock 19/23 if you will.
So I have P2K’s in 9mm, .40 and to a lesser extent .45 as the HK45c is basically a .45 P2000. There is an SK in there somewhere as well.
My thinking centered around muscle memory and having the “same” gun in multiple configurations and calibers so I would have the most flexibility in the easiest way.
So I have a P2000 setup with a light and P30 mags for nightstand. Another with flat floor plate 13 rounders for carry, .40 versions as needed etc.
I am also a paddle mag release lover.
I can shoot damn near anything passably well and have experience with a WIDE variety of firearms but the above are my serious guns and have been for a long time.

Chris

MikeinNCI went thru the paring down the calibers thing...I’m down to
9
45- discarded it, but bought a 1911 last year just because everyone needs a 1911.
22
40
38
357
380 for Mrs. Mike
And round ball for the flinters I own
So basically I canned 45colt and 32auto.
.
I was thinking of switching my EDC to. STI in 9mm (the 1911 frame is a great platform)
But I already have a G19, it works, never breaks, mags are cheap and plentiful vs 65-75 for STI mags...so for EDC it’s the G19 or a j frame...the other guns I have are for play or target.

FredwardI considered it, but every time another "crisis" come up, and some calibers become scarce. I maintain several EDC handguns in various calibers "in case". I am currently carrying a 239 in 40 because I have mucho ammo and mags for it.

az47830549mm and .45acp in a 1911 platform is my primary choice. I have a revolver 'cause everyone needs one, and a couple of 9mm SIG striker pistols.

.38supersigHmm...
Looks like I'll have to get me one of them 9mm Glocks someday...
Naa! I'm having too much fun with all of the .38 Super Glocks instead.

Jester814Having just gotten a P365 and REALLY REALLY liking it, I'm seriously considering trading in all my other pistols and switching purely to 365/320s in 9mm.
Just wish the 365 took 320 mags. That'd cinch it for me.

I do keep away from adding new calibers, but I currently have more than just 9/38.
If Glocks work for you, maybe just get a 1911 for fun range times?

I shot 45s in the army. Qualified expert with them, never did like them.
I carry a G22 and love it. Also have a Ruger single action revolver in 357 (as I recall). Bought it because it reminded me of the one I had, and carried, while in the army. Carried, in the field. Germany was not all that hot on GIs carrying weapons when off duty.

egregoreSelf-defense/carry guns? No particular platform (I have two hammer DA/SAs and one single-action striker), but I've pretty much standardized the caliber - 9mm Luger.

18DAII "standardized" on S&W 3rd Gen pistols back when the agency eliminated our revolvers. That was around 2003.
I still use and carry various models of same. In 45, with the exception of my thin, small lightweight 3rd gen 9mm summertime guns.
I have tried all the rest. Yes, ALL of them. As a firearms instructor and working in the LGS. 1911s, Sigs, Glocks, HKs and what passes as a s&w these days. Among others. I found absolutely no reason to change. None.
And I am very satisfied with my choice. Regards 18DAI

erj_pilotI "standardized" to one semi-auto pistol caliber so that I wouldn't have to buy die sets for 4 or 5 others. Keeps my reloading bench and efforts simplified...

I bought my wife a brand new S&W 3913 back in 1990 when I graduated law school. It's a very safe, awesome gun. We still have it. I recently bought another for my daughter. You can't go wrong with them.

radiomanTrying to get down to 3 platforms for handgun: Sig classic P in 9mm, S&W .38/.357 plus the .22LR Buckmark.
I'm already at one platform for Rifle and one for shotgun.
Long ago, a wise person on this forum convinced me to simplify my life, and I took that advice

Appliance BradMy first Sig was a SP2340. I fell in love with the size of the P230 and moved to that maybe a decade ago. Had a serious 2 year flirtation with the P320. Just could not get comfortable with a striker fired gun going back to leather. Back to the 239 and am anxiously awaiting getting my nine back from Bruce Gray after he completes his magic on it.
So the answer is classic DA/SA Sigs and I've about completed the move to 9 mm.
The exception is when I wear dress clothes, i carry a P3AT in a BRL pocket holster.

jjtnovaI started this way, standardized on 9mm sigs and nato caliber rifles, but I also own historic rifles as well, mostly 30.06 but a few others sprinkled in. Recently I ventured outside my sig pistol standard, bought an hk and a bhp, still in 9mm but definitely different controls. I’ll use those for fun, I still shoot 90% of the time with a 226 and a 365.

henryaz 10mm for me. In my later years, I have pared down my pistol collection to just two guns, both 10mm. A Ruger GP-100 and a SIG P220 Elite 10mm. Both shoot the same SD ammo (Underwood 180gr Gold Dots).
