Do you name inanimate objects?

rsboloDo you name inanimate objects?
DO you name your cars, guns, guitars, etc.?
I'm curious because I had someone mention buying a new gun and needing a name for "her". I've never felt the need to name any of my possessions.
Maybe I am lacking in some emotional way, I don't know.
What do you guys think? Is naming things weird or am I missing a gear?

GeorgeairUnless you're painting a name on the back of a boat, no. I've known people that come up with funny nicknames for objects, just not something in my world.
Well, our kids did name an M3 "Emma", but they were, well, kids.

MagnumUThere is a great backstory about why B.B. King named his guitar "Lucille."
https://www.biography.com/news/bb-king-lucille-guitarMy wife names her cars and that has rubbed off on me - her red Mustang GT is Roxi.

mike28wI've called guns, cars and other projects all sort of various names , if I was struggling to get them to work. Mostly obscene names, dealing with their "parentage" . I don't imagine that is what you're looking for.....

PowerSurgeNope. That’s for women. Such as my g/f who has named her Lexus, “Lexi”

maxdogI named my first purchased pistol, a “Star“ made in Spain, “General Franco”. Seemed appropriate I guess back in 1971.

benny6I don't normally name guns, but a couple have naturally earned nicknames. My first M14 weighed 17.5 pounds and I kept saying it was a beast of a rifle. I eventually just called it "The Beast." I built another M14 with a heavy Lothar-Walther barrel which is my most accurate shooting rifle to date. SigForum member weshowe named it "The Walther Wonder" and the name stuck.
Other than that, I haven't named anything.

bendableThere is a corner ,down the street that we call "turn two".
Because the people that use it speed up to get to it ( from either direction)
Then slam on the brakes to make the turn , then floor it again,
Pretty much
Like turn # 2

casI've named a couple but it never sticks, I'll change it. My 10ga single shot I called
Thumper. I'd drawn a Thumper the rabbit on the camo stock. Then I called it
the log for a while, it's not lightweight. Now I call it
the big boom.
Any gun I've named has been for smaller ones in big cartridges that kick like hell and the names have usually been derogatory.
I have followed the Vice Grip Garage way and named my lump hammer at work "Tanya".

rsboloI am relieved. These are all answers I understand.
I can certainly understand a name growing from a story or incident, like a nickname. My buddy just made the statement as if it were a normal occurrence that everyone did.
"I'm going to have to come up with a name for her." He said as we discussed his new purchase.

casI have a friend who does that with pretty much every gun he buys, and he buys and sells often. A flavor of the kind of month guy. But the name thing is mostly a silly online thing. He'll tease us with posts of... "Coming soon.. the such and such!"
Then when he gets it he'll post pictures, "introducing such and such".
He'll post I'm shooting XZY match this weekend, and bringing "such and such!" But in person he doesn't really use the names often.

Scott in NCalAll the cars and trucks get alliterative first names. Frank Ford, Hank Honda, Nicki Nissan, Buck Buick. In my family it has been rhat way since Martha Mercury back in the 1930s. My impression of this is unimportant, it is not going to change.

1967GoatNope, with 1 exception. I have an old beater plow truck. It's two tone brown. I bought it from a company called Buffalo Park Development. It has the company logo/picture on the doors...you guessed it, a buffalo. We (my young kids) call it, The Buffalo Truck.
I've had folks over my house and asked why we call it The Buffalo Truck. I just point to the door, lol.
I'm also not a fan of nicknames for people either.

ggileNormally no, but my pickup has the word MONK in the VIN number, so I call it Monk.

PHPaulSometimes. Usually punny in nature.
My big tractor is the "Cabota". Kubota with a cab...sorta named itself.
My little tractor is Guido. It's a Pasquali which is obviously Italian. Again, just sorta happened.
A previous tractor, a 1938 Farmall F14 was called The Red Menace. It was extremely temperamental about starting and strained my vocabulary on a regular basis.
Only ever named one 4 wheeled vehicle (other than the generic "miserable sonofabitch!") an extremely dilapitated 1965 Chevy short bed step side. It was "BUDS" for Big, Ugly, Dirty and Smelly. "Big" was a bit of a stretch, but it definitely qualified for all the rest. It was my Stealth Rod. Slightly warmed over 350 and a Muncie wide-ratio. Embarrassed a few kids with it...
Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.
