I believe in the principle of Due Process |
My world clock app is goofy. There is no apparent provision to edit or adjust it, merely add cities or delete them. The problem is that while it accurately show local time, USA times, it is off an hour for European time zones, like UTC. I suspect it has something to do with daylight savings. Any hints how to get it straightened out? Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me. When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Yep. Those are correct for this time zone. The time is an hour off for UTC and Central European time, maybe others. I'd delete the app, do a Network Reset of iPad then reinstall the app.

Can you do that with a "built in app?" What's a network reset? Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me. When you had the votes, we did things your way. iOs is supposed to adjust time automatically, actually polling the various timezones to detect a DST. But I think it only checks once a day; can you just wait 24 hours and see if it recalibrates? Or has this been an ongoing issue for more than a day?

I've been annoyed by this for some time. Being a radio operator for nearly 60 years, I've been a stickler for correct time. Now that my wife is in her home in France, I want to be able to see the time there, and it is wrong. The U.S. times are all correct, but UTC and CET, maybe others, are off by an hour. As a workaround how about just setting the time manually?

Well, that's what we think is going on, but the problem is how to fix it.

My local time (EST DST) is correct, as is UTC and London time. Didn't find an entry for CET. (Didn't look hard. I'm doing a power consumption test, Part Deux. Today's being "What's it like if I leave it alone?") iPhone 6S with iOS 10.3.2. Are you up-to-date on OS and apps? "America is at that awkward stage. Paris is CET. I think the problem may be that I am on UTC, but the iPad isn't. It is displaying London time, not UTC. My watch is UTC. Ah, the French. Still thinking themselves the center of the universe. Or, at least, Europe
So if you go into the world time app and add UTC to the list of times it displays, does it show the right time? Here's the thing about general purpose operating systems that support time zones. (Well, modern systems, anyway.) They have a value buried somewhere in their innards that is the current time in UTC. No matter where in the world those systems are located, they all have the same value for "time" at any instant. What you see is that time adjusted for your time zone. If I may be allowed to geek-out, for reasons of demonstration, I will demonstrate by way of some off-the-cuff code: $ perl -e 'use Date::Calc qw(Gmtime); printf "%02d:%02d:%02d\n", (Gmtime(time()))[3..5]' 14:05:32 $ perl -e 'use Date::Calc qw(Localtime); printf "%02d:%02d:%02d\n", (Localtime(time()))[3..5]' 10:05:41 They both get their time from a function named "time()", which queries the system for the current time, but, the former expresses that in terms of UTC, which the latter in terms of the local time (which it figures out from either a system setting or the executing program's environment.) (N.B.: For the computer/network geeks out there: Yes, I know my explanation isn't strictly accurate, but, it's close enough for explaining the principle of interest, here.) I was astonished to see in the iPad app a city selection for UTC which had escaped my notice, and my suspicions. When I got this iPad a couple of years ago, it was during normal time, I set it up with London as the city, the same as UTC, and Paris, and I was fat, dumb and happy. Ahh, I didn't think that it was a stock Apple app. You can delete some but not most and I doubt if the Clock app will allow a remove/re-install. I still think the Network Reset works to clear up a lot of issues, you could still try that: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204051

I'm happy to say that since I realized the app featured both London Time and UTC, sometimes but not always the same, the "problem" has been resolved. I deleted London and added UTC instead. Unfortunately, the insanity that is Daylight "Savings" Time has infected our UK and European brethren, as well. So, yes: When London is on standard time they will match. Otherwise they'll be an hour off from one another. "America is at that awkward stage.
