There are more factors than sales volume. In my state the checks are run in the state capital. There was a backlog, resulting in delays, so the state police hired more contractors to run the checks. Same thing happened at BATFE, they hired more contractors to process background checks for suppressors. These agencies answer to state/federal legislatures. A few complaints to the right constituent services person will correct a number of issues, especially since the prior administration eased the rules on contractors. When there's an overwhelming demand, it's now much easier to, in essence, hire temps. Also, as mentioned before, some states allow a concealed carry permit to suffice for a background check. In the store where I work, the vast majority of purchasers have permits, we probably only run checks on 1/4 of gun purchases.

I was aware that some states’ concealed carry permits allowed purchases without on the spot background checks, but not the difference between the states’ handling the checks or the checks going directly to the FBI. They evidently go through the Colorado Bureau of Investigation here, and that would explain the inordinate delays as compared with other states. According to the FBI data, the number of NICS checks hasn’t declined recently, so that’s evidently not the reason.

Now I’m curious what Colorado has done to reduce the processing period. Could it be, “Oh, my gosh! Gun buyers are having to wait much too long to pick up their guns. We must hire more people to handle the checks”? Ummm …, no, probably not, but who knows?

Thanks for the responses. As I indicated earlier, I have learned something more from the forum members.

Other, the supply has run out....

WRT NICS checks, in NC and TX if you hold a CCW/LTC no check is required, you fill out the 4473 and you are done. The dealer can run you thru NICS if he chooses to, but since you already have a LTC you are good to go.

Also, remember that some numbers of checks are fixed expenses and do not reflect sales. Kentucky CCDW holders have a background check ran through NICS every 60 days. Many states are similar.

In January, it took 4 and 6 days for CBI to clear on 2 of my purchases. I understand that the FBI portion clears in minutes normally, but CBI is short staffed.

Here in Louisiana too. The last two guns I bought I used my La Concealed Handgun Permit.

This. A few months ago my grandson and I were at a local gun shop, and decided to buy pistols. My NICS check took about 30 seconds. His took nearly half an hour. Why? Because I have a CCP and he did not. At least that is what the folks at the shop said.

here's the thing on my end... I just checked my data base and I have bought a minimum of 45 guns that were either from or transferred through my local FFL and not one of those has had a back ground check..... For some very good reason if you have a concealed weapons permit here in S.C. then the FFL does not have to do the back ground check.

Saying more than I should, this is a good thing for me because I'm pretty sure if they called in I would not be approved. Back in 2011 I tried to get a suppressor and was denied twice by the FBI back ground check for it. The best the BAFTE investigator could determine the reason was because I grew a Marijuana plant while in College in 1978. Which I disclosed on my application for an SC CWP and is now a misdemeanor here in S.C. That's what it has to be ... can't be that 10 years or so later I was suspected of being the Unabomber....
