My parents are 2 counties removed, so they only pay registration, starting this year. TX dropped the safety portion for inspections.
I am in Travis County so I still have to do an inspection. It isn’t even close to an “emissions testing”. All they do is plug in a computer to make sure you don’t have any codes. If my gas cap is loose, I will fail yet some car blowing out a smog of black smoke can pass. Very stupid. Then on top of that, there is no longer a real safety inspection of vehicles. I remember when they checked everything about your vehicle for it to be safe on the road.

We live in a state that doesn't require them, but when I still lived in Arizona they were annual.

It's free but it's a PITA. They have been trying to get rid of it forever.
