In 1978 I had a 69 Mercury Couger, four guns and some tools. I had a full-time job and was a Marine reservist. My wife worked at the same place I did, and we bought a 2-bedroom starter house. Things were tight but we always had five hundred or so in the bank. This month is our 45th Wedding Anniversary.

We were so broke we ate pancakes 5-6 nights a week for supper and ate with my parents the other nights. Lunch was a sandwich and we only ate out at McDonalds off the value menu. This was in 1990, btw. Rent was $90 a week for a dilapidated mobile home in a trailer park and I drove a truck Dad gave me.
As long as we were together, I never had two pennies to rub together because of her spending habits and unwillingness to work.

Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.
