Child’s Lemonade Stand Shut Down For Lack Of Permit

DENVER (CBS4) – Denver police shut down a lemonade stand put on by a group of brothers over a permitting issue.

When Jennifer Knowles helped her sons set up their first lemonade stand over the weekend, she thought it would be a lesson in entrepreneurship and charity.

“The boys went online and they decided they wanted to help a child in another country less fortunate, and we found a place in Colorado Springs called Charity International, and they picked a five-year-old boy in Indonesia,” she said.

But they got an unexpected lesson too.

“Someone complained about our lemonade stand,” said Knowles.

Turns out, you need a permit to operate a lemonade stand in Denver similar to hot dog, peanut and sunflower seed vendors outside Coors Field.

The city says it’s about health and safety, but in the Knowles’ case, competition may also be in play.
The Knowles set up right next to the Denver Arts Festival, where there was a lemonade vendor.

“We had never thought that the other lemonade vendor could feel threatened by our little kid lemonade stand,” she said. “I can understand why someone would get upset.”

The family sold lemonade 2 for $1 while, she says, the vendor sold it for $7 a glass.

Still, she plans to make lemonade out of lemons by asking the city to waive permits in the future for kids’ lemonade stands when another stand isn’t nearby.

“In hindsight we would have never set up where we did, when we did, and we would have just done it another time. Lesson learned,” she said.

The lemonade stand wasn’t totally a bust. Knowles says they raked in about $200 for charity before police shut them down.

A permit would definitely have cut into profits. It runs $125 for a one day operation.

Why is anyone surprised at this?? Denver; another liberal, progressive democrat run city. I would expect nothing less from these politicians.
When will people wise up and vote these tyrants out?

Hang on a sec, did they set this stand up on their property, or did they go over to somewhere with a lot of foot traffic and just set up a business?

If it’s the former, I echo the other poster’s disgust. If it’s the former, then the Knowles can stuff it.

Yeah, Denver is that much safer today.

the take-away lesson from this is that Denver is not a place you want to live

they will do everything they can to separate you from your money to give to their own 'charity case' about which you have no choice

the message the kid learned is that you cannot ever trust city hall

The other entrepreneur followed the rules, paid $125 for a permit, and has a $7.00 asking price.

You circumvent the permit payment and can wayyyy undercut their price.

I'm failing to see the tragedy here. If they are busting kids for doing in their driveway that's one thing, butset up at or just outside a major venue that others had paid for permits and space rental makes sense to me.

What is the difference between that and employers who compete by using illegals and paying them lower wages and no unemployment compensation??

Around here years ago we had about 5 Mexican restaurants using illegals. The other restaurants complained and the sheriff arrested the illegals.
Not sure if he did something to the owners?

But then all hell broke loose. Letters and new reports about the evil sheriff. You would think these were 7 y.o.s running a lemonade stand the way the progressives blasted our sheriff.
But he had broad shoulders and told them to piss off.

isn't Denver the same place where you need a permit to shovel snow and mow lawns?
