Retired 2nd Time (This Time For Good!)

SigFanRetired 2nd Time (This Time For Good!)
Effective 31 Jan 2026, I retired from Federal Civil Service (DoD) after 19 1/2 years. I retired from the USAF with 20 years active duty back in 2006. So this time it’s for good!
It felt a little weird not getting up at 0345hrs this morning to go to work. I’m over that already!! Now all my time is mine! Until my wife issues my new orders, of course…
Before anyone familiar with FERS asks, yes, I considered the small permanent reduction to my pension by bailing out with less than 20 years, as well as the lower (standard) multiplier by not waiting until I hit 62 y.o.; but I just didn’t want to continue the stress for the next 10 months with the changes coming within my DoD Agency. My
time is much more valuable than the little bit of money I’m passing up. Now I have more time to spend with my wife and my grandchildren — that’s absolutely priceless to me!

Rey HRHJust go do the things you wish you had time to do while you were working. Retired life is better that way.
My joke is every Friday, I say to my wife, “Whew! I’m glad is long week is over. Thank God for the weekend.” She just laughs at my corny joke.
"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I like that joke!
I’m hoping to finally get to the range on a regular basis.

PHPaulCongrats!
Everybody says it, but it's true: You'll soon wonder how you had time to work.

I remember when Dad retired, he said, "Every day is Saturday! And that's great, until your mom wants something done on Saturday."

Politicians seem to have forgotten that they work for us, not the other way around.

911BossCongrats!
I absolutely love not working for da man! Of course, working full time for da wife isn’t always a treat but it has it benefits

I still have a 0700 daily alarm set, miserly on principal. Most days I wake up before it goes off, sometimes it goes off but I like having the option to ignore it if I wish.

AglifterA) I’m not retired - and becoming a father definitely changed that timeline - but we have been looking at houses more aimed at retired folks. (Essentially houses, but with the maintenance of a condo.)
Mostly, because I like the extremely low crime parts of FL near the ocean.
B) The minimal maintenance also has a lot of appeal. Essentially, I want to spend my time working, or playing with my kids, or being with my wife/sailing/shooting/etc.
I have no desire to keep up a lawn, or fool with a house, etc.
I like the idea of a small homestead - as does the wife, but not practical for various reasons right now - but that’s chores for a purpose.
Suburban toil seems to be a complete waste of time.
Not sure how relevant it is, but if you’ve gotten free, and aren’t all the way free, maybe rent a nice condo somewhere, and try it out.

Have a good friend who after retiring observed that martinis moved from 6 to 5.
Then to 4.
When he was mixing them at noon he realized he was going to have to reverse this trend line!
