Mrs. V-Tail has expressed a yearning for fruit cake.

What is the recommendation for a commonly available store-bought variety?

Not looking for special order, not looking for a recipe for home baked, I just want to know what brands to look for, and to avoid, when I stop in at the local grocery store, either Publix or the Walmart Neighborhood Market. Or Winn-Dixie, if they have something particularly good.

That was my suggestion too, but she has been reading some online reviews and Claxton is not coming out nearly as well as I had thought it would.

One major complaint is that the dominant fruit in the Claxton cakes is raisin -- reviewers state it might as well be called "raisin cake" instead of "fruit cake," and my wife is not really that fond of raisins. They say that the current stuff is nowhere as good as the older production.

I was in Publix the other day and saw some sort of KY Bourbon fruit cake. Looked big and expensive, have no idea how good it may be. If you find one that's good and not just a "raisin" cake, let us know.

Otherwise we just buy an English pudding and drizzle with custard - Brandy.

I don't eat fruit cake, but I believe the Publix bakery makes/sells one.

My brother and SIL send me a Collin Street Bakery fruitcake every Christmas. I don’t know how it compares to others, but it’s good. Especially when moistened with whiskey.

In last year’s fruitcake thread, it was oft recommended.

Available from Amazon via Prime two-day delivery.

Most fruitcake benefits from a generous application of bourbon. Particularly if ingested in sufficient quantity prior to eating the fruitcake.

I will add my $.02 worth. The best store bought fruit cake is the the one left behind by the purchaser.

I don't care for fruitcake, but I've always heard good things about the ones from Collin Creek Bakery (plus, it's from Texas...).

The Mrs used to bake our Christmas cakes. But over the years she found that LIDL or Aldies sells some pretty good stuff. From its appearance the ones from Aldies come from Germany.

Couple years ago someone here on the board recommended an outfit from New Hampshire or Vermont- one of them little states back east. I ordered two. They were pretty good.

Bien Fait is the name. One we got had the bourbon already installed. It was a big hit.

I know this is purely academic-you want a fruitcake available locally.
