I have a question for our auto mechanics
My wife and I own a 2015 Toyota RAV4 with 65,000 miles on it.
I had it in for a tire rotation today and the advisor recommended the following services.
The A/C evaporator cleaned.
Clean and service engine induction system.
Clean fuel injectors.
Are these services really necessary at 65,000 miles. I usually keep my cars till over 150,000 to 200,000 miles.
I have had some of those services done in the past but not at 65,000 miles.
So I guess my question is do I really need this done and if so at what mileage should I wait till.

No. I wouldn't perform those services unless you have performance issues.

Sounds senseless to me unless there is a specific reason to do them. Any issue with your AC. Car hesitating/sluggish at all.

These services sound like ones that will be easy money for the dealer. Ask them how they clean the injectors. Are they just dumping a can of fuel injection cleaner in the gas tank?

If you use top tier gas your injectors should be fine.

No, none of it is necessary!

If it makes you feel any better hit the evaporator with a hose and toss in a can of Chevron Techron. R&R the air filter. Or don't, as the others have said, you are fine.

The A/C evaporator cleaned......

I'm not an auto mechanic as are the other respondents to your questions but that cleaning the evaporator suggestion really has me puzzled. If yours is where most of them are I'd think just hosing it out's gonna make a hell of a mess? Is that what they have proposed?

No, unless it stinks. However, the car almost certainly has a cabin air filter. If this has not been changed, it is past due. Curious that they didn't recommend it.

While a lot of crap does build up on the inside of an intake manifold and the induction service can be beneficial, I don't think you need this at such low mileage. I wouldn't recommend it if I were working on it.

Suggestion: If there is a Discount Tire location near you, go there for tire rotation. Tires is all they do so there will be no attempt at upselling.

That would be a big NOPE as everyone suggested.
Though I do run a bottle of Chevron Techron (fuel system cleaner) in the gas tank every 25k Miles.

How much did they want for these services???
I HATE places that suggest all these nonsensical services and refuse to do business with those that do.

I have a 2011 RAV-4 with 126,000 miles on it and have had none of those done. Car runs just fine.

I would pass. Those are huge upsell items. Consult your manual on when those services should be performed.

First question would be - Is this at the dealership, and does any of that jive with what your car's manual says?
Is that engine direct injection, and if so is it known to require manual cleaning of the intake valves?
Are you experiencing any hard starts, rough idle, or any other noticeable issues?

I currently own three Toyotas and one Lexus, and have owned about 10 different Toyotas prior to that. I do most maintenance on my own, but I am not a professional mechanic. I am very familiar with Toyotas, as well as the shenanigans Toyota dealers often try to pull.

NONE of those services are recommended in the manual for the vehicle. The only way any of those services are needed are if you are experiencing some operational problems. In addition, NONE of those services are beneficial to the vehicle, nor will they extend the service life of the vehicle. By the way, I also keep my vehicles a long time, like you do.

Toyota now offers free maintenance for two years or 20,000 miles when purchasing a new Toyota. In essence, this generally only covers oil changes and tire rotations, as that is all these vehicles need during the first couple of years. I don't even bother getting the free maintenance, as I don't want to subject myself to the aggressive upsell, and also, by the time I take the vehicles to the dealer and get them back, I could change the oil myself. That way, I know it is done right, and I use higher quality materials than the dealer does.

You're better off finding a local, small-time mechanic, build a relationship with them until you trust them, then, given them all your business. Stay away from the dealer except for warranty work.

I don't see any of these maint items listed in the manual at your mileage. I'd pass and then run a can of Techron through a full gas tank and repeat every 10,000 to 20,000 miles. More often won't hurt either as it's pretty inexpensive.

My mom has an '09 RAV4 with 140,000 miles. I've changed the oil and all filters, an O2 sensor, front and rear brake/rotors, and four spark plugs. I try and get her to run a tank of ethanol-free gas each month, but that doesn't always happen. The car still runs like new, and gets 25/31 mileage.

Most grocery stores have a small auto section, my local Kroger carries both Seafoam and Techron so I just watch when it goes on sale and grab a couple. Pour a bottle in when you fill up after an oil change. Unless you buy low grade cheap gas, and even then, that should be all you need to keep the fuel and induction system clean. Do change your cabin air filter regularly, they can be had at any auto parts store, Walmart, or Amazon. Simply google for how to find and change it on your specific car.
