I'm in my early 50's and after dropping 90 lbs two years ago started drinking coffee. Always loved the smell, but couldn't stand the taste. However, only cup I had ever drank was made by some old timer when I was like 19 and I think the spoon could have stood up in it.
Anyway, my wife tells me I have become a "Coffee Snob" and I freely admit it. Life is far too short to settle for crapy food and drink. Starbucks taste like fresh asphalt and has to be the absolute worst garbage ever produced. Every brand or off brand I have tried that they "roast" (BURN) taste nasty.
We were down in TEXAS visiting my cousin and stoped in Johnson City, TX and there was an absolutely great bar/restaurant,
Pecan Street Brewery, we went to that had great Pecan Coffee. Actual pecans ground in with the coffee not just added flavoring like most places. It was by far the best cup of coffee I have ever had.

nosticksAnything dark roasted in bean form ground at use and brewed strong enough that you can't see the bottom of the cup.

chbibcGreat topic! I love all types of coffee, except the flavored stuff; I am not fond of that(irish creme caramel nut banana mango, etc.). To each their own. My favorite is just a nice medium to dark roast. I never put creme or anything else in it - just black for me.
Every evening before we turn in I set up the coffee maker to start brewing at 5:30 a.m. I love waking up to the smell of fresh coffee brewing. I drink 3-4 cups a day during the week, usually just 1-2 on weekends.
I suppose that means every day I do wake up and smell the coffee.

I'm just not "me" without my morning coffee.

But I buy whatever is reasonably priced (there is a point of diminishing returns after about $6-$7 for an 11.5-oz. bag), leaning toward lighter roasts or so-called "breakfast blends." I use a percolator and inexpensive bottled water (my tap water tastes bad) to make it. I take it pure black, no adulterants. And no decaf. That is an oxymoron.

Blume9mmI'm not nearly sophisticated enough to define good coffee over most of the bad stuff... but I do like my cup (or two) in the morning... and usually sip on the left overs through out the day.
Coffee is probably my only other addition besides guns...
I do find it ironic that at the same time we (The U.S.) has fought a 'war on drugs' for the last 50+ years .... more and more 'drug emporiums' have been built on just about every corner .... Starbucks being the world leader...

sig229-SASMy wife and I like most dark roast coffees. We grind our beans fresh everyday and enjoy two cups each of Sumatra. Grinding roasted beans really allows the full aroma and taste to blossom.
All that said it comes down to what tastes the best for you.

Yes! We have a coffee shop (they roast and grind the beans) not far from us that is my supplier. I love the smell there!

OKCGeneLately I’ve been buying Italian Roast. Not French Roast. They’re not the same.
I want to try some real genuine Kona coffee. I guess I’ll have to order it from Hawaii.
It’s true of many things in life, and good coffee ain’t cheap, cheap coffee ain’t good.
BTW Costco sells a Texas pecan flavored coffee. I’ve not tried it yet.

I’ve always liked New Mexico Pinion Coffee. It’s not like it used to be, I think. I was told that they used to grind fresh Pinion nuts into the coffee but some health department rule said they had to stop that and use artificial flavor Pinion nuts because they weren’t a commercial kitchen. So I just ordered some fresh pinion nuts from NM and want to see if I can grind it well enough to get that amazing flavor again. BTW pinion nuts are expensive! (But price is what you pay, value is what you get.)

nhtagmemberwhen it was available i was partial and still am to 100% Kona coffee.
unfortunately the vendor i was using (the Maui Coffee Company) lost their last provider of Kona and has substituted Peaberry and after trying two bags to make sure Ive not ordered it again
i used to drink between 8 and 10 cups while in school, graduated, down to 3 and now since retirement I am down to one
coffee of choice today is Tim Horton's fine grind dark roast

Coffee grinds go stale within hours of grinding, no matter how well you try to seal it. Why relegate yourself to drinking stale coffee, just to save 20 seconds of grinding?

TVzombieI know I'm going against the tide here. But my daily cups are Starbucks Verona whole bean. I grind it by the cup and make expresso based drinks with it.

ensigmaticI buy whole bean roasted by a local roaster. Used to be whatever varietal they had struck my fancy. Kenyan AA used to be one of my go-to's. Ever since I acquired an espresso machine it's been their espresso blend.

Try... uh... Costa Rican, if memory serves? IIRC, that used to be my 2nd favorite, behind 100% Kona.

P250UA5I'm not overly picky. My go to at home is HEB Houston Blend, medium roast, both KCup & full pot brew.
At work, Green Mountain Colombian
My dad does HEB Guatemalan, which is a bit too light for me, but not bad.

GustoferCampfire coffee. Pour some grounds in a pot, fill with water, boil until it looks right, pour into a cup, and enjoy. Filter out the grounds with your mustache. It'll put hair on your chest.
