Finally. Pizza.
Food in CA generally sucks. At least those ethnically inspired. Chinese and Mexican food being the sole exceptions. And even the former is debatable.

Decent pizza is few and far between. But with retirement comes more opportunities to explore remote regions. And sometimes it pays off. It’s a bit of a drive for me, and not sure why they didn’t choose a less remote location but I finally found a decent pizza in CA. After more than 40 years.

I love retirement.

If you haven't found Zachary's Chicago pizza in the East Bay yet, look them up.

Yeah, don't keep it to yourself. Maybe they do mail-order. I get frozen dog food packed in dry ice shipped to my door, why couldn't somebody come up with a keep-it-hot packaging system? Cool

Is it Gioia Pizza? I went to culinary school with the guy, he grew up in NJ and brought that style out there to Berkeley and they LOVE IT

We have a couple of good Pizza joints in Pleasanton.

Gay 90's Pizzeria. Thick crust and lots of topping.

Zacharys like mentioned above.

They are located across the street from each other on Main Street. Both do a brisk business.

Looks tasty, but for $40 a pie? Hard nope. Get the same around here (north jersey) $20.

Everything else about jersey sucks but we have good pizza and bagels

konata88, you going to enlighten us as to the location of your new discovery?

Saying food in CA generally sucks is some pretty bold statement....pizza has come a long way to the point people now differentiate their pizzas by the regional style. There's no doubt there's plenty of crappy pizza but, there's also some very good/fantastic pizza available. Perhaps members can point you in the right direction or, provide some suggestions where your travels take you.

Being from Chicago, I'm slightly jaded when it comes to pizza. Thin, regular, stuffed, or deep dish, and YES, there is a difference! I've been to New York, and yes, a difference, but they have good pizza!

Detroit style; Ok, it's a contender.

Anywhere else... meh. Don't get me wrong, every once and a while, there's a "Spot" or a "Joint" in the middle of nowhere you'd expect, and they have good pizza.
Not doubting you about your pizza spot, and I hope it's one of those exceptions, but everything I've ever had out that way just doesn't come close to NY or Chicago pizza.

I HAVE TO MENTION:
There's a spot in Vernal, Utah that is phenomenal! On the main street, north side, east end of town, not too far from the Dinosaur Inn. I can't remember the name of the place, but a nice pizza oven in the corner. Owner was from New York.
Damn good pizza!

There's pizza, then there's Zachary's Pizza. They now have 4 locations in the East Bay. Best pizza I've ever had - so good I won't even touch the others' so-called pizzas.

I found what you said riveting.

You're 100% not looking in the right places if you can't find excellent ethnic food in the Bay let alone the entire state.

I grew up in Buffalo where pizza is practically a religion, and there are countless great pies to be had. I call it Goldilocks pizza- much thicker and generous with toppings than NYC ( to me it NYC pizza reminds me of cardboard with Keaton it - so weak)
But less thick than Chicago.
I do like Detroit which is very similar to Buffalo

Glad the OP found a pizza he likes. No such thing as a bad pizza in my opinion. It's hard to screw up dough, sauce, and cheese. There are places I would not go back to only because the pizza was not my style or was over-priced. Everyone has their own tastes. I've been able to find good pizza pretty much everywhere, you just have to know how and where to look. I grew up in Chicago and been to NY several times. Some of the best are the little hole-in-the-wall pizzerias.

A big +1 on the "Hole in the wall" places! A Mom & Pop / Family "Joint" or a "Spot"! Some of the best food period.

Oh Brother, you'd be surprised! I went to a place in New Orleans and I swear they put ketchup down. YUCK!

I've been told that it's something in the water and the pizza dough in New York and Chicago. Go to Miami, North Carolina, New Mexico, California... it's just not the same. Good, yeah, but just not the same.

You ever come back to Chi-Town, hit Flo & Santos on 13th and Wabash, or Vito & Nick's, 84th & Pulaski or
Pequods, 2207 N Clybourn for the Deep Dish!
