No governor can't prevent a fire from starting, but they sure can set-up their state for success for containing a fire. Here are just 2 of his many failures:
  • Not having water to put out the fires because the reservoirs are empty and the aquaduct system is managed by the state.
  • California Gov. Gavin Newsom cut $100M for fire prevention before deadly wildfires: report

I agree with other pundits like Tim Pool, Jesse Watters, etc, Gavin Newsom is toast, is done in regards to higher political office, he can kiss the 2028 election goodbye. Too many devastating wildfires under his watch, and this one tops it all, so much scrutiny on this one because of the zip codes it effected. His CA constituents are on to him now, and nationally, he is now a joke.

Starting the fires? Not necessarily. But the extent of the devastation? Most certainly.

I’ve come to never underestimate the California bubble. I talked to a good friend of mine who’s a smart guy and a doctor. He has lived in the Bay Area his entire life.

He said it has nothing to do with Gavin and this is going to put him in a perfect position to run for president in 2028 after he rebuilds all of this into an ultra modern “lifestyle” city that everyone around the world will wish to emulate. I’m not even kidding.

The fires are not his fault. Fires happen. The inadequate response lands partially on his desk. Infrastructure. Non existent or empty reservoirs. Neglecting to manage public lands in regard to overgrowth, deadfall, etc. Budgets that reflect policy preferences focusing on bullshit instead of public safety. There’s plenty of blame to go around. LA’s political class bears much of the blame in similar ways as the governor.

The weather reports prior to the events pointed to particularly dangerous conditions. While it’s impossible to have a fire brigade everyplace a spark may ignite it’s possible to remove much of what might ignite. It just isn’t done at any scale. Doing the work isn’t sexy. There are no ribbon cutting ceremonies or $10k a seat dinners where folks can jerk each other off. It costs too much except in retrospect when a large portion of the city burns. A billion dollars over the course of five years vs. $140 billion in losses over five days. Politicians want immediate gratification. It’s how they stay in power.

Many many careers need to end once the fires are out. This is the level of mismanagement Newsom will and bring to the US. Y’all mostly know. Too many others might be seeing it for the first time right now.

I think when the investigations are done we will find that it was not just the extraordinarily high Santa Ana winds that were responsible for starting the fires, but arson or accidental fires started by homeless/illegals/druggies in the mountains. For that the Dems bear full responsibility because they turn a blind eye to it.

Regarding the DEI crap in the LAFD, public utilities, etc: I am of the opinion that when people take their eye off the ball and chase fireflies and unicorns, they are bound to miss big things. And they did.

    Like reservoirs.

"Joke" seems to be a prerequisite for democratic candidates (Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Tim Walz), so Newsom is well qualified.

  • There was a state-wide bond measure that passed 10+ years ago to fund three major reservoir projects, all three located in the northern half of the state.
The Sites Reservoir in Northern-Central half of the Sacramento Valley along the CA aqueduct, has been proposed, funded, studied, engineered and fought for in the courtroom for 50-years. 2024 was supposed to finally have a shovel in the ground to begin its construction. The Temperance Flat Dam/Reservoir is a dam project just outside of Fresno on the San Joaquin River, capturing snowmelt off the Sierra-Nevadas. Being a dam on a major river the enviro-mentals are throwing everything they can against this one, citing the damage of damming up rivers and all manor of perceived catastrophes. The third project is Los Banos Grande Reservoir would also be in the Central valley, this one would also sit along the CA aqueduct, unlike the other two, this project I dont' even know if its even going to happen. Given the fight and attention the enviro-mentals have within the CA legislature a separate bond measure will likely need to be proposed for additional funding.

Water issues in CA are well documented in film, shows, documentaries and books, this event adds another chapter to the ongoing saga.

California native here... I don't think all that many people in this state will change their opinions. There are few centrists whose beliefs aren't already set in stone.

I can totally see a lot of people here being completely unable to see how this episode was magnified by the state and local government, how the "diversity" in their local government has hurt them, and will think it showcases Newsom's strength.

Outside of the state is a different matter and Newsom will never when a national election.

Or, perhaps, terrorism. I haven't seen it mentioned with regard to these fires, but I remember some years back that the threat was made to start fires in the western US.

The leaders presently in charge are DEI disciples or in the case of the departments, DEI hires. If these DEI hires do nothing but sign paychecks, contracts and remain relatively low, no problem. The problem came when an emergency occurred and the DEI heads of these departments did NOT have the knowledge, skill and ability to handle the situation . The people of LA need to vote competent leaders in to office and hold these politicians to appointing competent people to the department heads, not to appoint the person with the most letters in their identity or the pigment of their skin… Sadly, I’m not convinced that the views here will change much, even with all this destruction.

And Gavin's star has diminished in recent years in CA alone, since Covid. And will continue in the aftermath of this disaster.

Nationally, voters will not elect a Californian into higher office in the near future. Even Democrats in other states loathe Newsom. Trump has gained more CA votes in 2024 than 2016 and 2020. Gascon was thrown out with vengeance, same with London Breed in SF and other Soros DAs in the state. Karen Bass is burnt, burnt toast, she has no future in higher office. The abysmal performance of elected CA leaders in this disaster will linger for years.

These are the same fools that think the 'community of the future' on the windy plains in Solano County is a great idea. Nevermind the consistent winds, the water limitations and the fact it's in the middle of nowhere. Neighboring Rio Vista sits on the Sacramento river and everyone I know hates it there.

My $0.02 (Not that I am a smart or successful man or will ever live in CA):
    - HUGE population and tax base (Economies of scale and revenue most of the world could only dream about)

    - Obviously they should have had water towers and REDCON-1 ability to pump/haul/spray mega volumes of water wherever needed.
    - Location within artillery range of the bloody ocean... why not a SHTF option to pump/pipe/spray/truck America size volumes of ocean water to fight fires "post haste" I mean damn it 2025, even with 1999 technology it would be simple.... Caterpillar v12 powered pumps; hoses and pipes; tankers; sprayers

    - Now if I had a [x] million dollar house in this area that is prone to this kind of thing, It would be made from fire resistant stucco with a clay tile roof or similar. I probably have a pool at this level... Add a couple thousand gallon cistern underground... pair of diesel water pumps and a sprinkler system and I might be good. I'm talking like the ones from a mid-west "Pivot" on top of the house. Now take a block of 20 or 30 or 100 houses; everyone does this and they have a game changing fire break. OK, maybe have to cut back with the donations to the Democrat or special interest group of the day but they would have a shot. Tell me Mel Gibson who lost his 20-40m house does not wish he had something like this.
