I started subbing at my kids’ school maybe 10 years ago. At some point either while subbing for math or science, I tried to explain they could be smarter than rocket scientists if they kept their units straight. I then went on to explain the failure of the Mars Climate Observer as well as how much time and money was wasted.

I have no idea how I remembered that story the first time, but I’ve used it quite a bit since.
