I'm thinking about getting my wife an Apple Watch for Christmas. For those of you that have one, do I HAVE to have an additional data plan? Which one should I get? Looks like there will be some Black Friday deals coming out on Thanksgiving day on the Series 3. Any help would be appreciated!

I bought a Series 3 earlier this year after having had a Series 1 for a couple of years. I like it.

The Series 4 is even more of a "fitness" device. If your wife isn't that keen on tracking every aspect of her waking (and possibly sleeping) life, the Series 3 ought to be just fine.

you can get the one without the LTE option, it is cheaper and used the phone and wifi for connectivity.

My wife and I just got our first apple watches last month. I thought it was a gimmick, turns out we both find it very useful.

We got the LTE w/Sapphire screen for scratch resistance. You DO NOT need a data plan if not planning to work without phone -we/I have found that having cell on your wrist with no phone is great for running around, exercise, etc - wife and I both use it. For ATT the data plan is a $10 add on to your existing phone plan.

I've had a Series 1, Gen. 2 for a year-and-a-half. Love it. Runs circles around the ASUS ZenWatch I used to have. (Still have. Need to sell.)

It merely links with the phone. It has WiFi, so, when it's out-of-range of Bluetooth, it switches over to WiFi. (I presume the phone shares WiFi credentials with the watch over Bluetooth.)

Here's something amusing: You can actually hold phone conversations with the thing Smile I was away from my phone, earlier today, when my wife called. I simply picked it up on my watch.

OK thanks!

So what happens if I don't have a data plan, and I happen to get too far away from my phone for Bluetooth?

Wife has one and loves it. I'm thinking of the LTE types for the granddaughters going off to college. I like the idea they could call for help without needing the phone.

Unless you're connected to a WiFi network they're both on: You'll lose connectivity between watch and phone.

Watch will still work as a watch. And for health tracking and so-on. You won't get notifications. Won't be able to use the watch to find your phone.

I don't know if all carriers are the same but it's an extra 10 bucks a month to add an Apple watch to a verizon plan. My wife was intimidated by it when I bought her one but she loves it now.

The I watch 3 is going to be on a Black Friday sale this week. I am super pleased with mine. I have th3 LTE version, but don’t pay the 10 a month to activate the LTE.

I have the series 3 and I got one for the wife as a present. It works fine without LTE and as mentioned it will be heavily discounted this week.

Not sure if you are a Costco member but the 42mm series 3/GPS version is 260 right now. The smaller 38mm one is 230.

Wife and I each have a Series 2. We really enjoy them and, at this point, they are very inexpensive yet very functional. We’ve invested a few bucks in alternate watch bands for variety. Watch Amazon for sales on these. They’re usually about $5 a piece.

have had a series 3 form about 6-8 months and really like it. Don't have the LTE version but since I usually have my phone with me or near it's not an issue. I really like being able to answer calls or dismiss them without digging my phone out of my pocket. I never thought I'd warm up to this piece of tech, but it is really well done and very functional.

I just purchased series 4 for the mrs. The display popped off her series one; understand that's a common problem. The battery swells...It's non-cellular variety. Truthfully, I cannot foresee anytime she wouldn't be without her phone. She loves it.

She did buy a protector cover for it. Meh, don't know that I'd go that route. I know why she did it, but it desensitizes the touch feature and moisture can develop between it and screen on cold mornings.

I received a Series 2 as a retirement gift from my last full time employer. I too thought it was a gimmick, in fact when I got home I said "WTF am I going to do with this?"

I found out a lot of the functions of the phone were available and having a "Two Way Wrist Radio" using it for phone conversations is kind of handy at times.

I stand corrected.

I paired it to my iPhone on Sprint, no additional charge either.

wife has a series 2, I have a series 3, neither have the wireless data service. at work, if I left my phone charging, my watch used to disconnect from my phone. with the most recent update, as long as my watch and my phone are on the same wifi, I can still send and receive texts (imessages at least,) which is cool.

We've not had any issues with our watches, etiher. I did buy a little bodyguard protector thing for it, and my wife got a different band for hers. They are really, really useful. i 100% recommend one.
