I got a new hat and my kids made fun of me

92fstechI got a new hat and my kids made fun of me
I've been a baseball cap guy my whole life (bent bill, not flat). From the time I was a little kid there are pictures of me in various baseball caps, and I'd wear one until it was absolutely falling apart and Mom would make me toss it.
My current one is a Midway USA cap in dark kryptek camo. We're taking a trip to Europe in the fall to walk the Camino for two weeks, with a stop in Istanbul, and I figured something that says USA on it probably isn't the best idea, so I've been looking for something different for the trip.
We were in Sierra yesterday and I was looking at their hats and found this Henschell Aussie Breeze for $25. It fits my head perfectly, it's light and comfy, there's a cord for when it gets windy (saved it on the boat today!), it keeps the sun out of my eyes and off my ears and neck, and the ventilated top keeps it cool.
My wife shook her head and laughed but has gone out in public with me three times now while I was wearing it, so I think she secretly likes it. My kids think it's ridiculous. I think it's awesome, and very practical. I'm also 40 now, which according to the kids has put me over the hill, so I contend that qualifies me to start wearing weird old man stuff.
Whaddya say, Sigforum? Help me solve the family debate: Practical utility or too hipster for a small town Midwestern dude?

.38supersigGuessing I'm old as well.
Don't really see the problem here.
Large brim and mesh construction.
Your dermatologist will thank you later...

BB61I’ve got a similar one but I’ve got a few years on you and my wife and kids still mock me.

cmparrishWhen I venture away from a baseball cap, I get the same looks from my family.
Wear it with pride! Looks like a nice lid.

AKSuperDuallyI guess we're all in the same boat. I ordered a very similar hat last week, it's supposed to be in the mailbox today.

slosigThst is a hat worn by someone more concerned about function than style. I have two of them. The kids mouthing off about the style reminds me of the inDUHvidual at the baseball game wearing his ball cap with the brim to the back, then holding his hand up to block the sun so he can see
A friend in his eighties helped with a lot of blade work at the ranch and we’d often have a “cocktail” at quitting time. On more than one occasion he put the brim of his hat at at 2:00, 3:00, or 4:00, depending on where the sun was. It might have looked a little funny, but it worked.

Been there, done that lol. And over the years I've also gotten my ears sunburnt a bunch. This should correct that.

TigerDoreI've got one like it. It's a great hat and the mesh helps keep your head cool, as you know. You are smart to wear something to protect your face, ears and neck from the sun- and that is a good lesson to teach your children.
Wear the hat.

RogueJSKPeak over-the-hill dad fashion.

It'll go great with your black socks, sandals, and cargo shorts.
Or, if you prefer, tall white socks, white New Balance sneakers, and jean shorts.
Don't forget to tuck in your shirt, to show off your braided belt and cell phone holster.
(Fanny pack optional, but recommended.)

whanson_wiI have one very much like it. It's a huge improvement over ballcaps. I wish I could say I looked as smart as Forest Gump when I wear a baseball cap, but I cannot.

I would like to apologize to anyone I have *not* offended. Please be patient. I will get to you shortly.

The black socks, sandals, and cargo shorts have already been going on for years. Well, sandals just around the house...New Balance for any serious walking.

dsietsI want that hat.
That's very nice hat.
I'll hold on to it for you until you hit 50's because that's about when you stop worrying what other people think.
I would look great in that w/ black socks and sandals.

Seriously, pair it w/ black socks and sandals. Sit back and smile.
ETA: Crap, Rogue beat me to it. I agree, fanny pack is a plus. Yeah, I have one. I relate to honey badger as I don't give a shit.

vthokyFunny Hat vs Sunburned Ears… I’ll take the hat, please.
I’m usually a baseball cap guy, too, but for the beach, the river, and the yardwork, it’s often a boonie-style hat, similar in construction to what you bought. The Lovely Girlfriend isn’t really a fan of it, but I’m not a fan of sunburned ears either.

God bless America. June 12, 2025, 07:25 PM

I'm excited for it. It's been years since I've been out of the country and this will be something totally different. We've also got another trip to the Bighorns before that, so I'm hoping to get some use out of it there too.
