....this much?!?!? Paul Newman’s just sold for nearly $18,000,000.00!!!

“Well, it happened. The hammer has fallen on Paul Newman's very own Paul Newman Daytona, and it has become the most expensive watch ever sold at auction, fetching $17,752,500 (including buyer's premium) at Phillips in New York City. While many people thought the iconic watch would surely break records, likely beating the most expensive Daytona ever sold and the most expensive Rolex ever sold, it is still a surprise to see the iconic chronograph break the record for most expensive wristwatch. This is no joke, people.”

I’m sure Paul Newman would have been shocked by this too.

I bumped into Paul Newman in NYC in 1986, literally. My shoulder caught his shoulder walking opposite directions on the sidewalk. I said, "excuse me" without realizing who he was until he turned, waved and replied, "no problem".

I'm thinking I should sell my shoulder.

It’s not even a particularly attractive watch, either. Maybe worth $50.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

The way that segment of the watch market is going, the buyer will make a not insignificant amount of money should the buyer ever resell it.

And in 20 years, it'll sell for $45M. It's a combination of collectable watches being popular with people who have money, and some people having (literally) so much money, that it really doesn't F'ing matter what the hammer price is. Or at least, it wouldn't until the Ms become Bs.

I had a buddy that took Newman’s picture inside his race car at the 1984 SCCA race in Detroit. Wonder what he did with that pic?
