Has anyone disassembled a current gen Apple TV remote? I’d like to access the Siri button area and disable the button - cut wires, whatever to disable the button.

But not sure how to do it and what tools I need.

I don't think you can completely disable that function from the menu, correct me is otherwise.

Disassembly is not particularly easy, but once in I believe you can completely remove the switch. This video is pretty good...

Thx. Okay, I need a thin blade and <xx> size torx driver. Need to find out what size so I can buy it in advance.

iFixit generally sells any of the tools used in their teardown videos. They are small and not expensive. They also have tool kits, such as an iPhone tool kit, with one of each tool you would need. To me, the most important tool to get (included in the kits and some other packages), is the spudger.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to navigate to settings general Siri and select OFF.

Thanks. I’ll look into their kits - hope it comes w/ the right sized bit.

I know I’m repeating others but wouldn’t it just be easier to go in settings>general>Siri and turn it off? I have it off on my phone, tablet, and Apple tv’s.

Disabling Siri will not deactivate the side button completely. I believe it will then bring up a keyboard search, and blow you out of whatever app you were in. You then have to navigate all the way back to what you were doing.

That's what he wants to do, disconnect the button in some way. His question was how to do it.

Acc. to the video I posted, the switch assembly can be easily removed completely once you open the case.

Er... wouldn't it be far easier to just not press the button?

^No, it's not easy to avoid that side button. That remote is infamous for being susceptible to accidental activation every time you pick it up or handle it.

It's kind of the P320 of the computer world. Wink Big Grin

I thought of suggesting super-glue as well. This might work if done carefully.

But it would be fairly difficult or even impossible to reverse should you wish to re-activate the button. Apple may change functionality in the next tvOS update, you never know.

Looks pretty straight forward, at 2:30 he pulls the switch out, imagine you could leave the switch in so you don't have a hole in the side for dust, lint, pet hair etc to get inside and just disconnect the switch.

Question is once disconnected does it cause something else to not function, if not, should be simple to do.

Thanks, yes, per the video kkina posted (thanks!) it looks pretty easy provided the right tools are handy - I'm ordering them.

I'm assuming that the remote doesn't 'break' when I remove the switch. I don't need to worry about dust too much. I can tape over the hole and I also wrap the remote in plastic wrap (exposing only the charging port). I've had to replace remote already because of sticky fingers / liquid dropped onto the remote.

all the more reason to leave the button in, but just disconnect it, video shows it easily disconnects, then put the screws back in, switch covers and bobs your uncle...
