I imagine there are some low prices on 2024 Kawasaki and Suzuki base 4x4 ATV's with manual shift and no power steering.

No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

I’d buy used, I always see those for decent price due to the lack of interest in them. You need to look real well and ensure they have not been mudded. I see them pretty regularly around me real cheap (when you consider what they cost new). I can’t see paying what they are asking for new ones.

Last year I spent months scouring ads for used side by sides until I found a great deal. I ended up buying a 2019 Polaris Ranger 900 (with 30 something hours on it) for $8500. I got so tired of looking that I almost bought another ATV since they were plentiful and cheap compared to side by sides. I regularly see good ones for around $2000.

I’d research the different quirks of each brand/model and go from there. I liked my old Kawasaki Brute Force, that thing went through anything I ran across. ATv’s are a pain to work on, too much body work to remove to do basic tasks.

Not sure where you are at, but peruse the Facebook marketplace. Yes, I hate FB but it has the largest listing of atv’s, side by sides and autos in my area. That is the entire reason I Sam on FB. I found the smoking deal on my Polaris on FB marketplace.

So everything used is years old and $4k on up. Ridiculous. Some are 8-20+ years old. I mean come on. I have no idea who would buy?

Looks like Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Yamaha is going to be $6k+ new for a 400-500cc machine.
That would be without a winch.

I would have no qualms buying a 20+ year old ATV. The one I currently own is a 2000 model and cranks up on the first push of a button. I have to fix something on it every now and then but it's easy and cheap.

That is good but not willing to pay 80% of the cost of new one for one 20 years old. Crazy.

You might get lucky on a used ATV, but I'm always hesitant to roll those dice personally. Most ATV's, Sxs's, snowmachines, motorcycles (especially certain TYPES of mc's....), etc. live a pretty hard life. I don't want something someone else has ragged tf out that isn't going to last me. As a general rule. There are exceptions of course.

I think I missed where you said what you intended to use it for...

Yamaha Grizzley in that size range is nearly bombproof.

Polaris is hit or miss. Hondas are fine, but your use will matter.

I do not like to buy used ATV's. No one takes care of them as they should. For something to bomb around the yard... that might not matter. For something that you will rely on, it could matter a lot.

I have an 07 grizzly 450, that I can't kill. My wife and the kids have all ran it into trees and flipped it in ditches. I change the fluids, wash and lube it once a year, and it keeps kicking. Its even on its original battery, and it's stored outside all winter. I plowed with it for 2 winter, which is suicide for a wheeler.

I've been thinking about buying another one this year, or two. The jeep sure is a lot more comfortable though.

Up here...canams don't last. you don't see older polaris wheelers either. yamaha and honda.

I agree AK. After the debacle with the E-tec outboard Can-am and bombardier can screw themselves. Not a fan of Polaris either. Kawasaki and Suzuki are also pretty good machines. imho.
I am looking to do some moderate snow plowing. Other than that hauling tools, supplies and water around the place mostly. Maybe tow a small trailer.

FWIW, I am a Yamaha/Honda guy when it comes to ATVs and I have a 2011 Polaris Ranger Crew that has been very trouble-free. I don't make it work extremely hard but it's been very solid and it will drive up a wall and tow a 22' pontoon boat with ease.

I bought a '10 Grizzly 550 new. > 90% of it's use has been plowing a 250yd driveway with a 48" Moose plow. I, too, keep it stored outside (under a lean-to). If I remember, I'll put a battery tender on it. Other than that, I grease it when it squeaks, and keep the tires inflated. That's about it and it's still going strong. They are tough to kill.

^^^^ This. I've got a 2009 Grizzly 450 that is outstanding as well. It's lived a hard life, including a couple rolls down the hill when I lost it side-hilling up north in the taiga during the 40-Mile herd caribou hunt. It lives outside, had a plow on it for 5 years, and still on the original battery. I've got a 2007 Big Bear that I like even more. That one has a manual transmission and a pull start. Agreed with AK SD is the point. If you need a used one look for a late 00's to early teens Yamaha Grizz or Big Bear. IMHO. Honda Ranchers are also pretty bulletproof, but don't give as nice of a ride (solid rear axles vs independent wishbone on the Yamahas). Wet sump rear brakes vs disc are a plus as well.

IMO, for the purpose of plowing, I would prefer a straight axle in the rear. It is stronger. Honda has better offerings for that. I believe you can also get a honda with a geared transmission, also better for plowing. The belt drive of the yamaha is not ideal for plowing. That said, the belt drive in the 450 is the same as in the larger sxs, so it's overbuilt for the size. As are the axles.

That said... for your purposes, you'll seldom require the specialized ground clearance and rock climbing that the grizzly has special features for. A straightforward honda rancher may be cheaper, and may be stronger.

I've never owned a honda. My brother has a rincon that has been broken nearly every hunting season. He plows with it, and it's never ready for moose season.

Because you intend to keep it on site. I wouldn't shy away from a used rig. Look for a creampuff. I wouldn't ever buy one that someone else plowed with.
