So I've been filling up one of those 5 gallon water cooler jugs and after several years of throwing change in it it's about 75-80% full. Most of the change is quarters and there's plenty of dimes and nickels but no pennies. I have a separate 5 gallon jug for pennies. Anyone want to take a guess about how much money I have saved in change? Just bought a new car and trying to figure out how I can also get the new motorcycle I was looking at buying.

can't say for a 5gal water jug. But a 1 gal condiment jug used in restaurants and bars filled with just quarters is $1200-1500. I worked for a lady years back and that's how she would fund her vacations

I fit around $250 in quarters into a 3.5X7" cylindrical can. 5 gallon jug? You might have enough for the bike.

It's maybe 15% full, we don't deal in cash a lot anymore, so don't have change as often as we used to.

I got 5 gallon jug about 90% filled, I have been kind of curious of how much money is in it.
But I threw all my change in there

Years ago we took a 5 gallon jug that had change up to about 5", it came to $94, and it was VERY HEAVY!!

Depends on if you use a change counting machine, just don't lose the 12%.

I don't see that buying the bike, but it would go a long way to accessories and gear.

I used to put all my $1.00 bills in a box. Funded several vacations over the years.

I filled a 5 gallon jug to the point it was hard to pick up and move around. Pennies, dimes and nickels only, quarters went into a jar. Took maybe 5 years as I was buying drinks and snacks on when on patrol.
IIRC, it came to about $350.
Pro tip: dont get to looking at the jug and think:
"I bet there is a rare coin in there"!

Bad idea. By the time it gets to about half way, it will shatter when you try to move it.

Find a plastic one and save the glass bottle for something else.

Yup. Been there, done that. Thought about hauling that heavy sucker to the bank. If you sort them into piles of each coin, the bank should be able to purchase them based on weight at no charge (mine did).

Sorting may take time, but you'll be able to check them all as well and be surprised how many silver coins are still in circulation.

Mine was to the top and was worth around $3,248 and change. It helped me pay off a house.

I had $2700 and change when the family counted it out for a vacation. Not mostly quarters.

OK here's my story. I had a 5-gallon water bottle which I filled with nickels, dimes, and quarters. It took me a number of years maybe 12 or more but I finally got it filled to the brim. Some pennies got in accidentally but very few. When I had mentioned my "savings jar" to Tim, a friend who was VP of the bank I use, he said "those coins will be heavy so when you empty it, stop by the bank and we'll loan you some money bags".

So when it came time to cash it in I picked up the bags to get started. First I could barely move the filled glass bottle and when I finally got it out of the closet into the middle of the bedroom and tipped over the coins just stayed inside, dammed up at the neck! I started poking a wooden dowel rod in which freed up some coins to spill out but as soon as I stopped poking the rod in they stopped coming out, so it took quite a while to empty it and fill the bags. After that I loaded them in the car and took two in the bank up to the teller line telling her "Tim gave me the bags to bring in my change so you can count it", and went back for more bags. After the 2nd trip Tim had come down laughing and started carrying them around the counter to begin emptying the bags into the change counting machine while I watched with interest. A few minutes after it finally stopped he brought me the slip with the amount and (34) $100 bills along with some small bills, something like $3,461.xx if I recall correctly. In his other hand he handed me 4-5 washers and two 9mm rounds saying laughingly "we can't take these".

I definitely won't be using one of those change counting machines you see at Walmart. The plan is to take it directly to the bank.

No. But my local pawn shop / gun store has one that has been filled up over the years with cartridges/shells from guns that have been brought into the store for sale/pawn before they were unloaded.

Several years back, I had one that was about 1/3 full that I decided to cash in rather than deal with moving to my new house. It only ended up being about $400, but it was mostly pennies, nickels, and dimes.

I would think filled with dimes would yield the highest value?

The volume of 2.5 dimes is approximately 5% more than a quarter, so all things being equal, the quarters would yield more.
