The Stechschritt (literally, "piercing step") was developed in the 1700s. It's purpose was to move large masses of soldiers over the battlefield. Thanks for that link. It actually states NK's goose step is unique in that it's a bouncing goose step. I've seen the straight leg marching before, it was the bounce that piqued my interest.
