Wow, at 72 I am a fail with this test. Maybe some of you old farts can pass it and that's great!! My balance has improved quite a bit since working out a lot for for the last year but I still have a ways to go to get to where I want with balance. I can stand on one leg for quite while with no problem and do well on balance board with two feet. I do use wobble pad and half Bosu ball trying one leg stand and it is slow progress.

Anyhow might be fun for anyone to try if one is curious how good their balance is. The better your balance the less chance you have of falling and falling with resulting injuries is a huge problem when getting to around my age. Living where winters are cold and resulting ice just makes it that much worse.

I put on socks every morning standing up, but I don't have any shoes that tie, so probably not.

That's a bit extreme IMO. Flexibility, core muscle tone/condition and the cumulative effects of abuse to the body over many years (back issues?) can affect anyone's ability (of practically any age!) to pass that 'test'. You don't have to be old to feel old. Wink

Every single time I get out of the shower, I'm balancing on one foot while thoroughly drying the other (including between the toes from the top AND the bottom!) prior to putting a foot down on the bath mat. This is in part due my OCD not wanting to get the bath mat wet (w/ footprints especially!), but it also yields the benefit of exercising good muscle control and having excellent balance! Usually, I only feel old in the morning...Just sayin' Razz

Very true. But some may still benefit trying to see what they can do, even the much younger. Like I said at my age just being able to stand on one leg for a minute is considered pretty good and ability to stand on one leg is used as a test. One of my doctors asked me to demonstrate that at a visit for a back check. She even said it's not unusual that people my age can't put on their pants unless sitting down.

Yeah. That's Dr. Aaron Horschig of Squat University a widely respected physical therapist. I don't believe he come up with the test or who did or what age one is expected to be able to accomplish it at.

I'm 74, not a chance that I could do that, won't even try. I will readily admit that I am an "old man."

As long as I can still cut my own toenails, I'm good. I didn't put socks and shoes on, standing up, when I was 16.

I am 75 years old and there is no way in hell, but then I couldn't do that at 16.

My balance is just fine, but my lower spine precludes putting on shoes like that. I have to be very cautious putting on socks especially, and tying shoes. Clipping toenails is dangerous. If my L4, L5, S1 vertebrae get stressed the wrong way it will result in a week of pain.

I've done that for a while, too, to improve balance.

That said, make sure you have something close to grab or fall on if things go south.

Well, just performed the old man balance test, and I'm 62 yo. But I still workout with P90X five days a week, and doing Yoga-X once a week helps a lot.

Old man shit. I don't think I could have done that at any point in my life after the age of 13.

When I was in high school a cousin used to do these things where he'd stand on one foot, put the other leg straight out in front of him, squat all the way down, pause, then come back up. He'd say "You try." Like dude, I can't even do that with both feet on the floor. Knees would have none of that back then.

Congrats, you are head of the class. Smile

I have no idea if I could have done it at 62, 52, or even 42.
