Maine lobster harvesting ban
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_of_Maine

Apparently the Gulf of Maine is about 36,000 square miles, so "nearly 1000 square miles" is 2-3% of Gulf of Maine.

I've noticed that some right-wing media outlets don't seem much less prone to sensationalism, especially anti-Dem sensationalism, than the left-wing media outlets.

The article presents this as a crippling blow to the lobster fishery. Is the 2-3% that is closed to lobstering particularly important? What percentage of the prime lobster fishery in the Gulf of Maine is closed? Is this actually as significant as it is being presented?

That isn't meant to imply the closure isn't stupid. If the lobster fishermen haven't hurt a single whale in more than 15 years, it seems stupid to close lobster fishing in an area to protect the whales.

The tone just kind of comes off as outrage-peddling.

To the local fisherman it adds to their fuel cost no? A cost that I only see rising.

Is there anything that Biden can't destroy in his first term in office? Nothing seems Biden proof.

Yes the gulf of Maine may be 36,000 square miles but that doesn’t mean that the entire gulf is prime lobster habitat.

No doubt the people who have their hands up Bidets ass know full well where to close and what to leave open. If the prime habitat was 5000 square miles this was done to inflict the maximum discomfort to the fisherman. It wasn’t an accident.

Let the tourists in Maine pay $25 for a 1lb lobster. When they complain - their server can tell them about Biden's restrictions. It's for the whales Mr. Tourist.

Having been to Maine as a tourist, I'll let you in on a little secret. October to January is very off season in Maine. I went in early October once, and everything was either shutting down or about to for the winter. Tourists aren't eating lobsters caught in late fall / early winter.

I live 5 minutes over the border in NH. I have lived here 30 years and know Maine very well. October is leaf peeper season and the buses literally line US1 and 95N for miles. Tourism transitions to skiing in November/December. I am of course speaking for Southern Maine - much North of Augusta and you are spot on !

Additionally - the lobster industry is not going to wait to start incurring losses - you will see prices rise in the next week or two.

Of course he is, but Biden didn't any more make this decision than any of the other tidal wave of stupid decisions we've seen in the past few months. This administration on the other hand is pure evil and should be viewed as the root cause of everything that's bad in this country.

This does suck for those whose livelihood is being impacted by this ban and also for those who are witnessing an already expensive item become even more expensive. Thanks Biden. I hope more than just a few of your moronic supporters take a moment to think about how you fucked them. Maybe they can take a few minutes away from their Orange Man Bad programming to consider that they helped this happen to themselves.

I agree this sucks, and is a free market catastrophe.
It seems the extreme left wackos have free reign now, give it another 12-18 months and this will seem tame.

I also agree that lobster is way down the list of seafood I like.
Fresh shrimp, grouper and flounder are my favorites.
Headed to OBX next week, I go to play golf and fish/eat seafood. The wife likes the beach.

A good friend of mine goes to Maine every year for 3 or 4 days (from WV) just to get fresh lobster.
I don't get it. Crab legs are better than lobster, but a good soft shell blue crab beats them both, by a large margin.

I'm confused (which doesn't take much). Is the Maine ban ONLY in that small orange rectangular area marked Oct-Jan? That appears to be many miles off the coast, and I always thought lob-stah traps were in shallow water.

Count me as one of those (first time Maine) tourists who'll be looking for lobster in early October... We picked early October so we might catch some fall colors at the same time. Hoping this doesn't impact the lobstermen much.

Sounds like what the eco-cretins did out here.

MLPA - marine life protection area.

Only 20% will be closed off they said.

Yeah, the 20% you can get to by boat and the most productive areas - and it's broken up so that you could be legal, drift a bit, then you're not, then you are, then you're not...

Assholes all!

Face it, the goal is to eliminate all freedom, not to protect any marine life.

Most think Obama is. Some think Pelosi is. Biden and Harris are both dumber than a box of rocks, although AOC holds the championship for that title, and none of those three could decide for themselves what to eat for lunch.

I held off until I could talk to my neighbor who is a lobsterman that fished the affected area.

This is the same area that's been under consideration to have an off shore wind farm built. Funny how the lobster lines can kill the right whales, but electrical cables and anchor points don't?

Many feel that this isn't about the whales, but purely about being the lobster boats away from the area long enough to allow the .gov to say that the wind farm wouldn't become a negative impact to the fisheries, as it was already shut down for the whales.

I shall respect you until you open your mouth, from that point on, you must earn it yourself.
