JALLENAir Force E-9s?
I was eating lunch today north of San Antonio, at a Paneras where there were an inordinate number of Air Force female enlisted types. All were wearing BDUs, those kind of bluegreen camo jobs.
I noticed two or three of the older ones. When I got back, I looked up their sleeve markings. They were E-9s.
I realize that San Antonio has a large AF presence, and we were not that far from Randolph AFB, but 3 E-9s? Two of them were together, the third appeared to be separate.
How many E-9s are there?

bald1CMSGT or Chief Master Sargeants are also known as "1 in 100" as that's how many make E-9 in the Air Force.
Navy E-9s are Master Chief Petty Officers.

flashguyE-8s and E-9s are kind of the Air Force's answer to eliminating Warrant Officers--they do take on a number of tasks that would formerly have been given to WOs.

Yes, after all my years in the Navy Reserve, it struck me odd to find 3, count 'em, 3 E-9s all at one place for lunch. Randolph is a pilot training base, maybe other training there too.

SpinZoneKeep in mind that it's an exclusive club and they all network together. Every E-9 is going to know every other E-9 stationed in the same area and have a working relationship with them.

On top of that, it's largely a political position...so they HAVE to be social.
1 of my fellow BMT airmen have made chief that I know of, 2 more will most likely within the next 3 years.
3 of my previous supervisors are also chiefs.
If I had to guess...there's probably 40-50 E9's stationed at randolph. It's a huge training base. There could even be a symposium/gathering happening...but then you'd have seen 20-30 of them at once.

TomSI have no idea about the ranking but, living only 5-7 miles from the base, I will say they sure look look they are having fun!

2BobTannerDo not confuse the pay grade of E-9 with a Chief Master Sergeant. Sure, a CMS is an E-9 for pay purposes, but not all E-9s are CMS material. I served with both, and a CMS earned the respect while an E-9 occupied space on the manning document.

Judging by how many AF folks I see at lunch in the area, I'd guess the food on the base is pretty lousy.
Usually at the golf course, the food is pretty good.

Correct, the USAF is the only service that has no WOs, and they do not get the pay for it.

Adults Eternally Treated as Children Air Education and Traning Command. That means you'll see higher ranks in larger quantities than a normal base.
If I'm at Randolph, I'm going to Chester's. At most bases, the commissary deli is pretty good.

mr kablammoRAFB... fond memories as an USAF dependent about... 1972... ? Lived in the Kon Tiki apartments across the railroad tracks, got spectacles at the eye-doctor's shop on Universal across from the base, and swimming in the pool at the O-Club was a summer treat.
My mother and her friends would go to eat lunch at Leon's when she was a secretary at RAFB about 1961-1962. Sadly Leon's became dilapidated but I have fond memories.
Also, the July Fourth fireworks and the Thunderbirds were a good show.
