I'm fully aware. But it's the second one that's spent time in our house and they both were very stubborn with the house training. Also, the women were/are not into the discipline for constantly going inside because they're small and cute.

I already know the kids will not take care of it

I highly suggest you make the care of this dog a condition of ownership, and completely put the responsibility of its care on your kids. My parents did between my sister and I (we wanted the dog), although it devolved solely to me until I left for college.

My Son found one several years ago.
At the time he had 2 Puggles and a Mastif.
The little Yorkie was FEARLESS!
He would take on all comers.
The Mastif died and was replaced with a German Shepard, the Yorkie gave up no ground to the Shepard.
My Son lives in a rural area and has 12 acres, the GS patrols the area and will take on anything roaming the property, the Yorkie will kick his ass.If I didn't see it myself I would never believe how that little Yorkie dominates his terf and guards over my Sons 2 small children.
I have seen Yorkies that will cower and pee at the slightest threat.
It all depends on the Yorkie you pick. They Are Terriers and were originally breed to be fearless hunters.

My sister has one. Big dog heart in a small dog package. Hers is pretty smart. It doesn't bark much so she taught it to ring a bell at the back door when it wants/needs to go outside. Hers is friendly, well socialized, and well trained.

We bought a brother and sister 16 years ago.
We lived in the country and they were always chasing ground squirrels and caught a few.
The male and female would lay on our laps on their terms.
if you came to the house both thought you were there to see them mot us.
The girl died at 12 years and the boy at 15.
Smart good companions and they ran the house.

Yorkies are horny but too small to hurt your let.

Kidding aside, I'm fond of Terrier personalities. We had a small terrrier for 10 years, she was a real spitfire, completely filled with mischief and attitude, and thought she could whip a junkyard dog. One time she escaped the house and tried to pick a fight with a large dog. Luckily the large dog was not impresssed, and we rescued her before she committed suicide by dog. My wife loved that dog more than anything they were two peas in a pod. She was a mineature schnauzer, the runt of her litter.

My wife's friend has a Yorkie, she's a great family dog, a "guard" dog, and lapsitter. I would have a Yorkie.

Mom has a male. He is 1 year old. Remarkably smart, very sweet and never and I mean never yaps. This dog has been excellent. Been this way since day 1.

My parents have one. They're nice litle lap dogs if that's your thing.

You just have to learn to be careful with them. You can seriously injure or kill them if you aren't paying attention and step on them.

They're also 100% terrier. So they're pretty tenacious.

I am an absolute die hard fan of Labrador Retrievers, we have had Jack Russels, and I was around K-9 units for most of my career. But, by comparison my daughter had a Yorkie that lived 15 years. That was without a doubt one of the smartest dogs I ever encountered. He had a great personality and was easy to train. When they came to visit, I was impressed to see that little dog loved the water and would go for long swims in our lake at every chance. If he was characteristic of the breed there is much to admire.
