As stated, our 32 year old Trane XL70 furnace died and I got a bid to replace it with a Rheem. They will use the existing ducts. The only thing that will be changed is the furnace itself. Does $8,600 seem high to you? I checked and the retail cost of the unit is roughly $1,200.

Yeah, just replace and hook-up and dispose of the old furnace. That would mean it's mostly labor doesn't it? It is winter in the NW with cold temps the norm and we are in a hurry to get heat going again. This is a reputable company that has good reviews. I can't help but think we are being taken advantage of.

I think so, depending on warranty, etc. we had both our furnace and ac replaced about 2-3 years ago with a Trane. It’s a really good higher end model, can’t quite recall what they called it, but something about a dual type. Got a discount for getting both at the same time, and total cost was around 14k. So, furnace could be around your 8k price, as long as the warranty is good. Think ours came with a lifetime on service, and 10 yr on parts, something like that.
We’ve been really happy with both. Make sure you are being offered any discounts, check the warranty out first.

I paid far less for whole new system (in/out). It was a buddy that owed me a favor and 4 years ago or so, but it was $4k for builder grade basic system.

^^^ this

But it could be reasonable depending on what the equipment is and what they have to do to install it.

The only way to know is to compare or to trust your installer.
You don't want to over pay but if you under pay you could get compromises on the transaction too.

Disposal fee from wherever they're taking the old furnace? If there's asbestos or something involved, that could be a significant charge.

In 2010 or so I had my old electric furnace and water heater replaced with Trane gas ones, and AC installed. Including having the gas line run from out under the street into the garage, the bill came to a little over $13K. 11 years ago.

I also agree with this. Your quote sounds outrageous, but without another to compare it to, it may be in the ballpark of “normal”.

The other ones I've contacted say they are 2 to 4 weeks out, but the company I'm talking about can do the job this Monday.

Maybe where you live, but not here! I do boiler replacement for way less than that (which is more time consuming for less) I would ask for recommendations & getting other estimates!! Friends and neighbors are who you want to talk to!!!

Many HVAC company’s had multiple price increases last year

7 yrs ago I had a Hell heat pump installed (inside and outside units) was $7500
I had a string of issues, parts warrantied, service calls and labor added up quick

Replaced it this past summer with a top tier Trane inside and out with new ducts $26,000

This one comes with a 10 year parts and labor warranty.

They recycle them. Cut out coils then the rest for scrap metal prices. They get a few bucks to get rid of trash.

One thing I failed to mention is the financing. $3,000 down with the balance of $5,600 at 0% interest for 24 months. That seems like a fair deal to me.

It's not zero financing. The financing is rolled into inflated pricing. Please do as others suggested and get 2-3 more quotes.

I paid 11k for AC / furnace and some duct work. It’s a variable speed and was the top of the three levels they gave us.

If you're replacing a low-efficiency furnace with a standard-efficiency or high-efficiency furnace, there'll be more than just ripping out the old and installing the new.

Old low-efficiency furnace exhaust used unlined chimneys. You can still use a traditional chimney with a standard-efficiency furnace (±80%), but it'll have to have a stainless steel liner dropped in. A high-efficiency furnace (90-97%) will have to have a new, horizontal exhaust installed.

The $1,200 sounds low. Does that include freight and taxes? Any additional parts needed to make the furnace work? Gas connections?

It also depends on how fast you need the Furnace. If they say they can be there tomorrow, I'm sure there is a premium tacked on for the expediency.

Yes, the $8,600 feels a bit high, but is it money better spent getting heat back into the house?

Another thought.
Ask them what the price is if you pay cash. Should go down a couple points.
