With the winter meetings and the mlb station is advertising the new Billy Martin special. I did not realize he died at 61 as a passenger in his own pickup truck during a winter storm. I know there will be haters and that Billy had his demons. Honestly, we all do. He was a good player and had his best performances on the biggest stage during his career. I believe he one championships, both as a player and manager. Loved his passion. Nobody can question his love for the game. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

I loved Billy and was sad when he met his untimely though not surprising end. The Billy Ball days in Oakland were when I fell in love with baseball. He was from Berkeley too.

Billy Martin, when his number was retired Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me. When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

The thing I hate the most about baseball now is that the manager cannot come out to challenge an umpire over a call. He gets tossed the minute he steps out of the dugout. Really, how stupid of baseball. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

Managers come out and argue all the time without being tossed. I'm gonna vote for the funniest frog with the loudest croak on the highest log.

My dad always wondered, why it was the only sport, where the manager dressed up like the players. My favorite Billy Martin story had to do with an Old Timers game. Reportedly, he was sitting in the dugout with the legentary Ty Cobb. For all his talent, Cobb had a reputation for being a blowhard and an all around asshole. Cobb was regaling the younger players with tales of his aggressive base running and how he always slid into second base with "spikes flying". Martin listened patiently until Cobb was finished then said, "with all due respect, Mr. Cobb, if you had tried that with me, I would have handed you your teeth."

no, no they can't. They might come out and politely ask for a clarification. If they get into an argument over a call they get tossed, period. "Practice like you want to play in the game"
