South Korea closes its largest dog meat slaughterhouses
Glad to see this. Dogs shouldn’t be treated so cruelly.

“South Korea has shut down its largest dog meat slaughterhouse where animals were electrocuted in a 'landmark moment' for campaigners.

The Taepyeong-dong complex in Seongnam city, south of Seoul, housed at least six  slaughterhouses that could hold several hundred animals at a time, and was a major provider for dog meat restaurants across the country.

It will be cleared over two days and transformed into a public park, Seongnam city officials said.

Dogs were electrocuted before being butchered in the sight of other caged animals at the complex, US campaign group Humane Society International (HSI) said.

Activists found electrocution equipment, a pile of dead dogs, blood-stained knives and a 'de-hairing machine' when they visited the site on Thursday…”

Dogs are one of the few mammals that should never be on the menu. In my mind, it very closely approaches cannibalism.

I once saw a small flatbed truck in South Korea carrying numerous crates of dogs headed to slaughter. I have never seen sadder eyes on any dog in my life.

I hope this movement to discontinue dogs as a source of food continues until it is totally eliminated.

Throw whales into this as well. NO reason to be slaughtering them either.

Human consumption of dogs historically, has been linked to famine and lack of food options. Post-war South Korea, was a pretty bleak place for awhile and didn't modernize until the late-70's. For a modern society, South Korean should've abolished this practice a long time ago, glad to see it done, hopefully the rest of these places will follow shortly. Shark finning, for the sake of just the fins, along with whales, should also be apart of bans.

Perhaps the HSI can go after the Indians now (feathers not dots).

They are still eaten by several tribes.

I suppose that that would be racist though.

The way they kill them is barbaric but I have had gaegogi, it was an accident as they misunderstood bulgogi as gaegogi, but once you get past the fact that it's fido it is quite good.

When I was with 2nd ID my CO and I tried to buy a dog at one of the farms that littered the area as a unit mascot, they would not sell one to us. The puppies they sold in the market were truly sad....

I agree that eating dogs is an extreme survival type thing for me but if their culture accepts it Roll Eyes ....same for whales

I worked at a slaughter house in So Cal for about 15 years. I used to observe the kill floor from time to time, and i truly believe the cattle heading up the ramp knew what was what.

Fortunitely they practiced humane kills with bolts through the head/brain, but just before that moment you could see it in their eyes.

Eating dog in this day and age is total bullshit, and slaughtering them in that fashion......no excuse. From the pictures, the conditions were deplorable.

Makes me want to punch my Samsung tv right in the face.

In 1958 we had a mongrel dog in our radio site atop Signal Hill in Inchon. Dog never left the compound and slept in a radio van or Quonset Hut.

We kept a close eye on that mutt 'cause we knew that dog could be food for the locals.

They can take their culture and trade it in on a better one.

My first time in Korea we got a kitten from another American. Nice cat, no problems. One day it disappeared. Our maid said she’d talked to the maid across the hallway and the cat must have gotten out. No way.
It was then we learned that eating cats supposedly cured certain diseases. Pure folk medicine. That’s where the cat went.
I was able to get a pair of kittens. The lady I got the first from apologized for not telling me about cat eating.
The maid? After a “discussion” she took very good care of them.
