I signed up there, but for the life of me, can't get an avatar to work. What code are you guys using? I was trying to use the direct link code, but the forum keeps saying the link is inaccessible.
Hey I see your avatar just fine. It's working.

Yeah, that is the tinypic one . Trying to change it over to the imgbb.
ETA, which I cannot get to work. Or Imageshack. I was able to use some freeimagehosting site, that apparently uses imgur, and get a code the forum accepted. Weird thing is, I can't use imgur, unless I download an app for my phone. This message has been edited. Last edited by: bigpond73,

Today, I received an e-mail from TinyPic providing details on the timeline:

It doesn't work because avatar hosting is a violation of their Terms of Service:

Agreed. That's what I use. I pay ~$18 per year.
Thanks. I just signed up. I get 30 days to try out full features before paying $18.99.
BTW, the avatar in this post is ImageShack and the image in my other posts is TinyPic.

Meh, I'll just use one of the forum avatars. It's not really that important that I have a custom avatar.

And you can use Paypal for gun transactions until Paypal catches on.
The point is, they don't have the means to police every single user's photos to check to see if they're hosting avatars, but they'll shut you down for violating their Terms when/if they catch you doing it.

I'll deal with it when they catch on. All my pics are stored elsewhere as well.

So I've been using postimage since TinyPic's demise, but I can't get Sig Forum to accept the direct link of my avatar. It says that it cannot access the url. Help?!?!

^^^^^^^^ Postimage doesn't support avatar hosting.

I was using tinypic as well. Last night I went to freeimagehosting.net for my current avatar. It seems they host their images on imgur.

How do image hosting sites that don’t support avatars detect that an image is being used as an avatar?
Serious about crackers.

They probably have some sort of algorithm that compares image size, frequency of view/bandwidth use, and classification of hotlinking site.
Very small images (50x50ish) that are accessed very frequently through web forum sites are likely to be avatars.

It really wouldn't be very difficult.

After the demise of Photobucket (they didn't go out of business, just lost their minds going from free to $400/yr) I switched to Postimage. Avatars worked for about a month and then they shut them down (suspect too much bandwidth). That's how I ended up with avatars at Tinypic.

Probably most folks know this, but for those who don’t…
If, while viewing a thread with my iPhone, I hold my finger on an avatar, a window pops up with an offer to copy it. If I choose “Copy”, the avatar’s URL is inserted into my iPhone’s paste buffer. Handy.
Serious about crackers.

OK, maybe not. The pic I chose shows in my Personal Zone, but not in this post.
