I cleared a clog by blowing with compressed air.

That was several years ago. Now, on advice of the people who installed the new system, I pour half a cup of vinegar down the line every time I change the filter. Been doing this for a few years, no clogs since then.

AC runs about 24 hours a day, 365 days a year here in south Florida … I have to clean this drain out several times a year. I have tried compressed air and it does nothing. A regular shop vac on the drain sucks all the nasty stuff out. They make Algaecide tablets to drop in the line.

My drain line is only about 8 feet long and I just replace it with an inexpensive garden hose. If I wanted to clear it, I have a thin plumbers snake I could use.

My A/C here in Sunny Arizona only runs much during June, July and August. Even then, only around 1/3 to 1/2 of the time.

May and September it runs occasionally, the rest of the time it's off.

I've had to use a shop vac to suck out the crud once in the last 16 years.

Bad advice. Newer aluminum coils do not react well to bleach.

Are we discussing the same issue ? I'm talking about clearing the 1/2 " PVC drain line . NOWHERE near the coil .

Did you read the part about " for maintenance " ?
The line is clear and the water ( and bleach ) flow out to the drain , NOT back into the unit .

Do as you wish, but there's no getting around the fumes entering the coil cabinet.

I sure did. And like excam has said, even the fumes from bleach can and will cause corrosion. If you don’t want to heed warnings from those of us in the trade, then so be it. In the end it’s your coil and your money.

Been doing it that way for over 40 years . Never had an issue yet . No reason to change what works .

Bleach fumes will hurt the aluminum coils in the air handler over time. Vinegar or Hydrogen peroxide are much better/safer for maintenance of pouring it down the a/c drain. You know, because vinegar or hydrogen peroxide are so much more expensive than bleech.

If clogged though, you're going to need high pressure water (garden hose), shop vac, or compressed air to clear the clogged line.

I run bleach thru the AC drain as needed,
mixed strongly with very hot water

then a few good rinses with just water to prevent any rust or corrosion if any get on the metal work around the unit

Thanks everyone, I snaked the drain and flushed it with vinegar.

All is working now.

This place is great.
