It's time to upgrade my almost 10 year old PC, and THIS THREAD inspired me to get my 10 year old son involved in the build. He's fired up to put together a new PC with me (and then play Fortnite on it of course).

Primary use will be productivity (MS Office, Quickbooks, etc.), photo editing in Lightroom, and gaming. Budget is $3.5k or so. My monitor is a Dell 32" 4K U3219Q. My build so far is similar to the one in the second post in the thread linked above.

CPU - AMD Ryzen 3900X
MB - ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Hero or ASUS PRIME X570-PRO (whichever one I can find in stock first)
Cooler - Noctua NH-D15
RAM - Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB 3600MHz (2x16 GB)
SSD - Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1 TB NVMe
Secondary Storage - Seagate Barracuda Pro 8 TB
Video Card - ASUS GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11 GB ROG Strix Gaming OC
Case - Fractal Design Define 7
Power Supply - Corsair AX 850

Any comments or suggestions from the membership would be appreciated before I break out my credit card!

I’m not an AMD person but looks nice. I do like my ASUS mobo. I’ve had good and bad Corsair ram but that can happen with any. I like Antec for a PS.

Not sure because you didn't post it, but make sure your RAM is very speedy. Ryzen chips love super speedy RAM. Also, I'd recommend a NVME primary drive over that SSD. Faster drive and you save a SADA port in the process. Everything else looks really good (and really spendy Smile ).

It is an NVMe drive. I opted for the WD Black SN750, it was quite a bit less than the Samsung for near identical specs.

I like Intel chips, Crucial RAM, and EVGA motherboards and video cards, but that's splitting hairs. I will second the recommendation for fast RAM. DDR4 3600 seems to be a sweet spot for price/performance at a little under $200/32 GB.

I am not savvy enough to build my own, so last black Friday I was due for a new laptop anyways. I bought a new MSI GF75 thin 95C upgraded by Computer King. $1500 shipped free, 64GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 1TB HDD, Intel I7-9750H 6 core, 17.3" screen.

I use this PC for photo editing, and internet browsing, I don't play games, wanted these specs mainly for photo editing. This computer is on and running daily for 10 hours or so. It is a blazing fast machine, and has never hiccupped once.

Hey WH,
Might need to bother you about replacing our old desktop with a laptop, please.

Looking forward to following this thread, though.

Love it when folks take on these sorts of projects.

That GPU is a beast, but with the 3080ti right around the corner, maybe it's best to wait either for that to come out or 2080ti prices to come down some.

Having just upgraded myself to a new rig a couple weeks ago....I have no issues at all with what I see on that list. Cool Cool Cool

My new stuff

3900X
Crosshair VIII Hero
32 GB Trident Z Neo 4x8
2x 2080TI SLI
( I know, SLI is not technically "necessary" anymore I guess, but coming from a 1080TI SLI setup, a single 2080TI just didn't feel right...that and .gov actually paid for the second one)Big Grin

Stuff I transferred

500GB 960 Evo NVME Primary
4TB WD Black Secondary
1000 Watt Evga Power Supply
Watercooled

I have yet to use a Fractal case but from what I have been seeing and hearing, they are excellent cases. They have power supplies as well that are supposed to be pretty good also.

You should be pretty happy with that for a while Big Grin Big Grin

Edit to add, just in case you didn't know, there are "retailers" that you can get 10 from that would save you a few $$$.

Nothing exactly wrong with what you posted, but a few things I’d keep my mind open about if it was me:

1) a new generation of NVidia GPUs is coming out before the year ends. I’d strongly consider buying a 2080 Super and saving the extra $500 to out towards a next gen card when they come out. Yes, the 2080ti is the best, but this close to launch of a new generation, I really don’t think it’s insane price is justified.

2) MSI and Gigabyte have stepped up their BIOS game in the past two or three years, and I would have no problem recommending some of their boards if you can’t find the ASUS products in stock. The Gigabyte Aorus Master and Aorus Ultra are great boards, as are the MSI X570 Ace, Unify, and Tomahawk WiFi.

3) in my opinion, the Define 7 doesn’t have enough airflow for the parts you want to use. I would lean more towards a Fractal Meshify, or Lian Li’s O-11 and Lancool II models. No matter which one you get, you will want more fans than the case comes with. Two or even three intake fans and one exhaust will likely keep all the fans spinning slowly and make less noise than just the stock case fans spinning at higher speeds. Here is a review of the Define 7 that discusses my concerns: https://youtu.be/XeTxUjUrw4A

4) I prefer Seasonic power supplies, but the Corsair AX line is also top quality. I just tend to forget which of Corsairs product lines are good and which are just ok.

No matter what, that is going to be a very nice PC!

I built a system for my friend back in December that was to be used strictly for gaming and VR.

This case is beautiful:

I appreciate your input.

1) Very reasonable suggestion. Since I will probably build a PC for my son around holiday time, I could install the 2080 Super in his system and upgrade to the new NVIDIA flagship part in this build. Any suggestions on a specific 2080 Super card?

2) The Gigabyte boards look nice and are well reviewed. If one pops up in stock soon I will probably pull the trigger. I currently have and ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero on order from Amazon with and estimated delivery date of may 12 - May 21.

3) I've seen that review of the Define 7, and I have also seen reviews that say that cooling is fine in that case. Anyway, now I'm looking at the NZXT H710i suggested by jprebb.

4) I like Seasonic as well, but they are out of stock everywhere (like X570 motherboards). It is my understanding that the Corsair AX 850 is based on the Seasonic Prime Titanium platform so it should be a solid unit.

Thanks for your input.

That case looks great, and I am now strongly considering it.

I stuck with the Noctua air cooler because I have installed them before and have had good experiences with them. It looks like the NH-D15 I ordered from Amazon is out for delivery today.
