Thirty nine 850 mg tablets, to be exact. This prescription has turned out to be too strong for me and I have been prescribed a lesser strength dosage. I can’t use these and I dislike the idea of simply disposing of them, so my question is this; Can I offer these to someone else who is prescribed this particular dosage? They are good until 09/04/19 and I would be happy to forward them to a forum member who is prescribed these and is perhaps running low.

Your thoughts?

If your taking half the extra dose you should be able to cut them in half. They made pill cutters that make this easy. Had to cut pills in half for my dog.

Metformin is cheap not worth the risk if something goes wrong giving them to someone else.

Also don't cut them in half if they are time release or extended release.

It's against the law to give away or share a prescription. Federal offense. Metformin is a Schedule III drug.

That is precisely what I wanted to know. And pretty much what I suspected. Thank you.

Metformin and diarrhea can go together like peas and carrots. My family doctor and a gastroenterologist did not know that.

Dangerous drug, sch VI, not III (can't imagine anyone taking it for jollies anway Wink ).

Nevertheless I concur about not sharing the drug with someone else. Just dispose of properly.

Sorry to be "that guy" but metformin is not a controlled substance. Still not legal or a good idea to share of give away. Ask your pharmacist if it's ok to cut that specific tablet or dosage form in half and use them if you can get the correct dosage by splitting them.

Honest, guys, I’m NOT going to try donate them. Stupid idea. I get it. as for the cutting idea, the tablet is 850 mg, I am now on 500 mg, so cutting in half isn’t an option, I asked the pharmacist about just that when I picked up the new proscription. He just smiled and shook his head. Next time I go to the store I’ll take them with me and see if they can’t simply dispose of them.

Save them. Your prescribed dosage may change in the future.

I would give the half dose a try. 425mg is not that far off from 500mg. It might work for you. If they are scored, you can probably break them with your fingers, otherwise, pill cutters are cheap.

Just keep them. You likely won’t be at that dosage for ever. People generally go up in Mg’s
