That’s what I was thinking. For someone who should be used to those elements he was over reacting big time and was on the verge of doing the worst thing he possible could have. He probably had bloody fish on board and was in the process of trying to put himself on the menu.

I know fuck-all about Shark behavior beyond what I've seen on Television and in Movies. What would the shark likely do if you stabbed it a time or three with a pointy thing, rather than smacking at it with that kayak paddle? Would it fight back, or scurry away?

Bang Stick. ----------------------------- Guns are awesome because they shoot solid lead freedom. Every man should have several guns. And several dogs, because a man with a cat is a woman. Kurt Schlichter

Bet he’s gonna be the only guy at the bar who can say he once slapped the shit out of a hammer head with a paddle and have the video to prove it.

I may be mistaken but in the book Unbroken. there was a small discussion on sharks. IIRC hammerheads were often the most feared of the sharks in the Pacific. They were reported to have been one of the main aggressors for downed aircrews and sunk ships. As a side note, there was a bit of discussion on our losses per day just getting material (air) to the two theaters. Europe and the Pacific. We would at one point loose 500 men a day in just getting equipment to its respective theater.

In one of the Tom Clancy books John Clark used one of those on some bad boys in (I think) Baltimore. No, they did not survive. Found this after a quick search: http://www.billsbangsticks.com...-Powerhead_p_17.html

If you speared a shark, it would take off most likely. I speared a 45 lb. shark from a 24' boat, the spear went through the gills on one side, that slowed him way down -c1steve

If you bang stick one will it go away?

If you do it right they’ll just sink to the bottom. If you don’t it will really piss them off they’ll either attack or run or who knows. Very unpredictable.

Looks like he has a line out. Wonder if he had a fish on and that whipped up the little shark?

He used a zip gun, essentially the same idea, only concealable and less than 1' in length. Was a good read either way. A Perpetual Disappointment...

No, they're for sale all over the internet. They're just not sold on the stick anymore, you have to provide that.

Perhaps it would have been easier to simply reel in your line and paddle To shore? Seemed like the boater stayed in place and never tried to escape the situation. You are in the sharks turf - why not beat feet?

According to Wikipedia only 17 recorded unprovoked attacks on humans and no fatalities by Hammerheads. We stopped at a Florida State Park once, where we watched several idiot swimmers mingling with them in waist deep water and trying to pet them... unsuccessfully. The sharks looked to run 6-8 feet or so in length were staying just a few feet out of reach but some got between the swimmers and the beach at times. I stayed on the pier... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammerhead_shark Collecting dust.

The oars disturbing the water probably attracted the shark. I hooked a washcloth to the end of my line and was dipping and splashing it up and down off the pier to rinse it off and a pretty good size bass came up out of nowhere and hit it.

one of two scenarios there, first, the guy was possibly chumming which brought in the shark, or whatever he was fishing for was hanging underneath the boat. I've seen tarpon and dolphin do that, "hide" under a boat. rather than smacking the shark he should have just put some distance between him and the shark. And for the record, I have been "up close and personal" with quiet a few hammerheads (a few monsters) while scuba and free diving. They really are not that aggressive.
