Good source for a jui-jitsu gi? Login/Join

Hello,

At 47 I have decided to resume my study of martial arts. Gotta get off the couch and get my ass in better shape. Buddy recommended the local BJJ group. Met the instructor tonight and got a good vibe. Will do first month in sweats, then if I stick with it I’ll buy a gi. Besides google, can anyone recommend a source for a good gi that is around $150 or less?

Thank you!

Jim

I've been doing BJJ for eight years and I'll be 48 this year, I LOVE it and I hope you get hooked too. Good luck and train smart.

I did Jujitsu for a while, when still a teenager. Years later someone aggressively charged me, and I instantly through him down on his back. It happened so fast, it shocked both me and the aggressor.

Somehow that training stays with you. I have been told that karate is better for actual fighting, but I really liked training in Jujitsu.

I did BJJ for most of 10 years.

I used to order Gi's from mma warehouse or straight from the company for limited edition stuff.

I really liked Scramble, Tatami and PAdilla and Sons Gi's.

Hello,

A colleague suggested Sanabul on amazon.com - they get good reviews and are very affordable. I think that’s what I’ll go with.

Thanks folks!

Any input on these specific options is appreciated!

Scramble and tatami both make great all around Gi's. I dont like fuji, all the ones I had continued to shrink more and more until they were too short to work.

My advice, get a tatami or a scramble in blue or white, later during the summer, you might want to get a lighter Gi. Eventually you'll want a few anyways as you need to wash them after EVERY SINGLE Session.

Also, get some soft volleyball knee pads as well as some underarmour dry fit boxer briefs and a form fitting top to wear under the Gi. It will help you keep from gettin gpinched and rug burned so much.

Funny story. This past summer I forced my 14 yr old son to attend a Jiujitsu class with me. He's not athletic at all but he's pretty tough. He'd rather lounge around and play video games but I made him get off his ass and go to a class with me.
As for me, I've been into Martial Arts for years and I work out in a gym 5x's a week. I'm in better shape than 90% of people my age, and younger. Anyway, we go to this class and we work with the owner of the facility in a private session. At the end of the class, my Son was taught a move that had me tapping out. It was a choke submission.
On our way home from the class, I asked my Son if he wanted to go again. He said yes. I asked him why, since he was so reluctant to go at first. He replied: "I was able to submit you". I told him, it's not about size or strength, it's about technique. He's been going ever since.

Hello!

Thanks for naming two gi’s in particular. That’s very helpful to me!

Cool story about your son. Within 15 minutes of the class I was able to use leverage to get a much bigger guy off his feet and ready to flip. We didn’t complete any throws that night, but we did 4-5 other things that were all about leverage & technique. I was stunned! Very, very cool!!

I have 10 Gis, three Subculture, one Fuji, four Padilla and Sons, two 93 Brand, and the 93 Brand are my favorite. Also, my belts have all been Padilla and Sons, from white to my current belt 4-stripe purple. My brown and black will also be Padilla and Sons. Their belts are Gi material and awesome.

Hey,

I just saw the 93 brand moments ago. Look like the others to me; really don’t know what to look for!

A buddy said he started with Sanabal - sold on amazon - think I’ll get one of those for summer.

Thanks to the earlier comment about washing them after every session. I hadn’t thought about that!!

93 brand makes good stuff. you can check them allout on the rollmore website. I had the 100kilo from 93 brand back whenI was training a lot.

Really, in the end its about finding a fit you like and a style you like. Some people like more athletic fitting Gi's, others like looser more judo style. Some guys like solid colors, other like looking like a nascar.

After 10+ years of doing BJJ, Ive come to the conclusion that the gi dosent really matter as long as it fits and you'll likely end up with a bunch over time.
