I have posted a few times on topics where I have some expertise based on a 42 year career in the field (district manager with the Social Security Administration). I always briefly mention my background as an explanation of why I am posting.

Delusions of Adequacy |
I know a doctor who, when asked at gatherings what he did for a living, claimed to be a sewer worker. Said it really cut down on people asking for free advice. I have my own style of humor. I call it Snarkasm.

Eschew Obfuscation |
I met a doctor at a party recently. When he learned I was an attorney, he said "I hate going to social events and having people ask me for free medical advice. Do you have the same problem with people asking you for legal advice?" "Yes, I do", I said. But, I tell them "I don't work for free, but will answer three questions for you for $500." "$500!!", the doctor exclaimed, "Don't you think that's a bit much?" "Not at all", I said. "What's your third question?" _____________________________________________________________________ “One of the common failings among honorable people is a failure to appreciate how thoroughly dishonorable some other people can be, and how dangerous it is to trust them.” – Thomas Sowell

Fighting the good fight |
I use a similar tactic. I get that "what do you do for a living" is seen as an innocent topic of conversation by most folks, but in my case, it's just not worth opening that whole can of worms, especially with a stranger or passing acquaintance.
