Have had the higher rated security locks from kwikset for a long time. A couple of them are wearing out. Not sure what to get.

Could change to schlage/Baldwin, but not sure if they will last longer.

Was thinking Medeco, but have been hearing some things about their durability over time.

Found Abloy online, which looks promising, though certainly for it it appears that I'd need a locksmith to do that and all the keys for sure, which isn't a hinderance, as long as one around here can stock it.

Would love a deadbolt with key on outside and keypad on inside. Haven't seen those, but perhaps can just install others backwards?? Double cylinders are great... if no one keeps a key in the inside cylinder - so would like a solution for that too.

Baldwin is trash in my experience. Shlage/kwikset are ok.

Medeco is unnecessary. If they are having durability issues that is new, typically they are just overly robust and "exclusive." No one is out there picking locks.

Never had issues with assa abloy, the product or getting locksmithing for them. They are expensive but people don't mind paying.

Any of these makers you can order multiples all keyed alike, and HD/Lowes will do it on the spot by a number on the key.

You haven't seen them because no one wants them, and I've never had anyone ask for that. You could possibly get two sets and make something yourself, maybe.

Double cylinders are not great, they are a hazard. In a fire or emergency someone could become trapped. In many locales they are not to code for this reason. In a residential application you don't want a door that can't be opened from inside without having a key/code.

I've put in varieties of the new keypad deadbolts, some of them can be activated over the internet/phone. They have to be well aligned with the jamb and not binding to work automatically, so sometimes don't go in old doors well, without some carpentry.

As far as security, any of these will be as secure as the door it's going in. In a residential application, you're only going to get so secure, until you build a fortress. Shlage/kwikset is adequate, someone will still be forced to attack the door/jamb or go for a window. There are also door bracing and reinforcing kits out there if you want. If you want more security, get a dog and/or a security system. Lots of choices for cameras/security systems now.

Arc.

I put an expensive Baldwin handle & latch set on my front door when I purchase my townhome 15 years ago. They break! Baldwin does have a lifetime guarantee so most parts have been replaced at least once. Had a no name Schlage knock off on the back door that broke inside the cylinder. Replaced with a Schlage & locked myself out several times (if the inside knob is turned to lock, the inside knob still rotates open, but is still locked). Put the Schlage on the garage door & bought a standard Baldwin set for the back & have had no problems.

I went with Abloy when we bought the new house.
I bought them at
https://www.willisklein.com/Showroom.HTML

They are down on Walton Ave and will take good care of you. They’ll key them all the same for you.

More so than manufacturer, compare the quality of the locks themselves. Grade 3 being the least well built, grade 2, and grade 1 being commercial quality.

A grade 1 lock should outlast a grade 3 several times over.

My locks are Hercular Mul-T-Lock captive deadbolts. They have a key on the inside that has a knob on it like single cylinder deadbolt. It can only be removed if you use the regular key. When you remove the captive key, it functions as a double cylinder deadbolt. We remove the captive keys when we are on vacation and store them along with all of our extra keys in a safe deposit box.

Assa Abloy owns Mul-T-Lock, Medeco, Yale, and a few others.

As others have stated, locks alone offer little security. In our particular case, having a double cylinder lock on the door forces the crooks to either break to door open or haul everything through a broken window. Hopefully, that slows them down enough that the sheriff shows up because of the alarm system. We get notified via cell phone if the alarm goes off before the monitoring company can even call.

Great answers, as expected. Thank you all!

Layered security etc is all squared away. This one aspect is wearing out at different points so I was looking to replace/upgrade, and got exactly the feedback I had hoped for.

Long live Sigforum!

Mul-T-Lock, Medeco, Abloy and ASSA are all part of the same company, ASSA ABLOY. I work for ASSA ABLOY Americas, specifically the division encompassing ASSA, ABLOY, Medeco, Adams Rite, HES, Securitron and Folger Adam. You want ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 locks.

If you send me an e-mail (in my profile) I can help guide you.
