19-year-old Omaha man dies after being struck by SUV on I-29 in Iowa

By Mara Klecker / World-Herald staff writer Dec 18, 2017 Updated 4 hrs ago

A 19-year-old Omaha man died early Saturday after being struck by an SUV while riding a skateboard on Interstate 29 in Mills County, Iowa.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2015 Toyota 4Runner driven by Sarah Elizabeth Perry, 37, struck Tyler Ryan Givens-Dunn at 2:10 a.m.

Perry’s vehicle was traveling north on Interstate 29. Near mile marker 33, while in the left lane to pass a semitrailer, the 4Runner struck Givens-Dunn, who was riding a skateboard in the left lane, the patrol said.

Friends said on Facebook that Givens-Dunn was with a group who went to a concert in Kansas City on Friday night. On the way home, their car ran out of gas. He took his skateboard and was headed to a gas station when he was hit.

Givens-Dunn went to Westside High School until January and was working in maintenance for hotels in Omaha. He leaves behind a son who recently turned 1 year old.

Friends on social media remembered him as kind, a loving father and a man who “had a smile that would make you smile.”

My first thoughts as well. It sounds like you are ridiculing the guy when you merely recount what he did.

Yeah, skateboarding on the left lane.

I was going to feel sorry for the guy as I can understand wanting to get to a gas station fairly quick and you have a skateboard anyway. But in the left lane???

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
