lychee and longan
I enjoy tropical fruits. Among them include lychee and longan and rambutan. Generally difficult to find here stateside. And even when I see them in the stores, usually: 1) they don't taste good, and/or 2) they came from prc. So, I haven't really bought them for a long time.

I saw lychee and longan in the store recently. While apprehensive, I gave them a shot primarily because they came from Vietnam and South Africa, two places I haven't associated w/ these fruits.

Wow, I was impressed! Very tasty and juicy. A little pricey but assuming that these are seasonal and will be gone soon so I've been taking advantage of it. Been years since I've had some good ones.

Anyone who likes these and sees them in the store, these seem better than what one might be used to having available around here.

Thanks.

I had lychee last weekend in boba tea and really enjoyed it. It had been years since I had lychee.

Oh, yeah, I like all those. Had some rambutan not too long ago. Sometimes pick up a dragonfruit as well.

I settle for canned lychee.

Lychee prices are up three fold.

We are trying to find alternate sources for our kosher sorbet.

I paid $5.99/lb for the lychee and longan. Again, expensive but once a year for me.

Our caterers pay it. I’m not sure the retail customers are ready for flavor dependent pricing.

Ah, sorry, I didn't understand your context. It's business, rather than personal consumption. Got it.

Ahhhhh, the Fifth Flavor!

Had this once. It was so awful I remember precisely where we were sitting (Trader Joes lot in Indy, in our '93 Suburban) who was with us (wife, Simon, Beth and our daughter, the instigator) and why we were there (USGP, 2002).

Thankfully we were parked, so we could all open the doors and spit it out at the same time!

I would trade living in a free state over fresh lychee in a heartbeat. As you have. Smile

I wonder if you had a good one (and just didn't like the taste) vs getting the vile crap that we usually get here. Rambutan in Thailand are delicious; can't say I've really found good ones here. But it could also be somewhat of an acquired taste.

There are tropical fruits I don't like. Like star fruit. Or durian.

Oh, brother. But before you go to where I am, have your fill of good Chinese food and dim sum. Closest decent Chinese restaurant to me is 45 minutes away. And sometimes I have to fill that need.

But, yes, there are some things worth going without for freedom.

And, now that you remind me, I like jack fruit too but the canned ones are too sweet. Canned lychee is the right sweetness for my brain.

Decent dimsum is about 45 min away from me too. But over the past few years, I've only gone once. I think I can do without from now. Smile Much rather have freedom.

I love jackfruit as well. I get the frozen ones rather than the canned (haven't actually tried canned ones). Dried ones are decent too but not as good as frozen.

I like Lychee, but ive only had it in the Philippines. Speaking of the Phil's, the mangoes we get here from Mexico suck compared to those from the Philippines.

Agree. I don't care for the mangos from mexico at all. Weak mango taste and very fibrous.

Mangos in Taiwan, Phil's, SE Asia are much better. As usual, there is a $100 mango sold in Japan. Never tried it but while it sounds good, it's not much better than the normally available mangos.

I especially like the small (green) mangos available in Taiwan (and perhaps elsewhere as well).

Back on topic - it's hard to find good lychee here. So, kind of a psa to let everyone know that the ones from SA available now (at least around here) are pretty good.

In Brooklyn, there's a donut shop that has lychee donuts. It's in the form of a Munckin, not a traditional filled donut. You pop the entire think in your mouth and it explodes with a little bit of heaven.
