I have wrestled with whether to post this or not. Please know that I do it with an attitude of grateful excitement rather than boastfulness. One of my good friends, recently divorced, was to spend his first Christmas alone and isolated on his farm in Idaho. Mrs DF had to work at the hospital and none of my boys were able to be home today. So I was to be alone too. Jed and I determined we would do better if we found some way to serve others. We decided to buy breakfasts in individual boxes, drive around downtown SLC and see what we could see. It snowed last night and was fairly miserable out this morning. We drove slowly and found several people pressing through the snow to nowhere in particular. Each was alone. Each looked to be in survival mode. We pulled up and asked each if he/she was hungry. Some were outright honest while some were reticent, not knowing if we could be trusted. I think that is understandable. To each we handed their hot breakfast and OJ (the drink, not the criminal). Some were happy to speak with us a bit while others just wanted to eat in peace. They were so kind and quick to wish us a Merry Christmas. Frankly, I wish I could have done more. In fact, I am determined to do so more often. I can't fix the world, but I can make it a little better. This has been one of my better Christmases. You’re a lying dog-faced pony soldier

That’s fantastic! Seriously. I’ve struggled this year with focusing only on myself. I’ve hurt others I dearly love. I’ve been selfish and I continue to have waves of remorse and shame and depression. I really - really - want to focus on others going forward. To have a true spirit of thankfulness. I think what you and your friend did is great. Thank you for sharing and showing others that even simple acts of kindnesses do as much for us as they do for others. I’ll try to emulate your generosity and kindness. Good for you for doing something generous today. My Company volunteered at a food bank in Savannah right before we went on block leave. I only have about 20 Soldiers stateside right now, the rest are deployed in Afghanistan but we were still able to help out with our small numbers.

DF, what a great way to spend Christmas morning! I view this as a truly Christian act. I am Jewish, we might call this a mitzvah. mitz·vah ˈmitsvə' noun

The true spirit of Christmas! Well done sir, and your friend as well. Thank you for being there for those in need. There is no need to struggle with this. Your act of humanity could well inspire others. You did A Good Thing. No need to hide your light under a bushel. Give the rest of us something to think about. This is the way things are supposed to work. People helping people. Directly. Thank you. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

Well said V-Tail. You are right about inspiring others. It's made me feel a little ashamed for not giving my time as well as some money like I do. It's not just the money but the selfless effort that makes you one of the good guys darthfuster. I Am The Walrus |
You done good. My take on some homeless people are that some may have mental disabilities. Just severe enough to not be able to be hired and/or stay employed yet not severe enough to receive full time medical care. The Wal Mart we shop at, there's a few homeless people on the corner. I won't give to a certain guy after I saw him talking on a cell phone under the overpass. The women, we will sometimes buy them a gallon of water, sub sandwich and baby wipes. They express their gratitude and that's enough for us. _____________
