77 years ago today, 617 SQN RAF, flying Avro 'Lancaster' B. Mk III (Specials) attacked dams in the Ruhr valley. 19 aircraft took part, and 53 of 133 crewmen were killed - a loss rate of 40%.

617 were later named 'The Dambusters' and adopted the motto 'Après moi le déluge ("After me the flood")'.

The squadron is still in service today.
