I want to completely delete Google from my life. This could be a replacement for Gmail.

It will only replace Gmail if it's free and you don't use an Android phone.

Why? You can run other email clients and web-based clients on Android phones,

You need a Gmail account to set up the phone.

I'll be on XMail in a New York heartbeat--if not faster.

So? You set up the account, set up your phone, set up your preferred email app with XMail, stash the GMail app somewhere out of the way, and, like magic, you're not using GMail.

I've had a Google account since 2011. I haven't used GMail since we moved to iThings in 2017.

As for "free": If it's free: You're not the customer, you're the product.

it would be great if you can block an entire domain to get rid of a lot of the push crap that changes the username with every email but the domain remains the same

I don't think so, Tim.

Somebody's owned it for a while...

$ whois xmail.com
Domain Name: XMAIL.COM
Registry Domain ID: 2762558_DOMAIN_COM-VRSN
Registrar WHOIS Server: whois.godaddy.com

I would imagine Musk'll try to buy the domain and, if they try to take him to the cleaners, he'll simply do something like Apple did wrt the 'iWatch" trade name and work around it.

There's also an XMail email server project. IIRC, that's what I used to use at work and at home before I switched to Postfix everywhere.

So, you're Android phone is still logged in to Google and as far as you know they are tracking and listening to you over your phone. Or you can take their word for it that they're not.

I have had a good experience with Proton Mail. Free, but with paid upgrade options. The administrators seem to be very concerned about preserving privacy and security. The web client is not unlike GMail in capabilities, and they have additional "products," most of which are free for account holders, including a shim that lets you use any mail client to access their servers, and the ability to use your own domain name.

+1 for Proton, I started out using a free account but have found it really useful and am now using the paid version. I also use their VPN.
